I'd be fucked if i got the one lump sum. It'd be gone in a week on houses and various cars, then have to live on air for 3 years.

But if you were in Shaq's shoes you've also got a lot of money from endorsements and side projects coming in.

Tue Jun 24, 2008 3:17 pm

Just spells more houses and more cars.

Apparently, my problems run a little deeper than just being a spend-whore.

IIRC the NBA doesn't allow lump sum payments anymore because of what Shaq did in the past.
Salary payments are now given on intervals, as dictated by the players contract, no lump sum gimmes.

But that's the beauty of it. You can just go out and endorse a few more products. Problem solved.

What happens if a team doesn't have 5 players to start the game ? (injuried or smth)

Wed Jun 25, 2008 2:36 am

Lose by default? A team must at least have 8 available players.

Wed Jun 25, 2008 2:38 am

Depending on the circumstances, they'd probably have to forfeit or the game would be postponed.

I didn't really notice it myself, but I remember once reading how Kevin Garnett gets away with switching his pivot foot on his turnaround jumpers. Anyone else notice this? I don't have footage and didn't really notice during the finals and such.

EDIT: I also wanna ask, aren't these also travels?

Though I've read from somewhere (once again lacking a source for proof) that in the NBA, the second foot is counted as a pivot foot, while at high school and college level, the very first step you take after you lose your dribble is your pivot.

Wed Jun 25, 2008 2:44 pm

The first video was four steps since he actually moves his pivot foot before putting his second foot down.

My thought on the up and under pivot move is if you take the rule literally without room for interpretation, it is a travel unless the player jumps using both legs. However, it is quite awkward to try and jump from your back(pivot) foot or even both feet in that situation since your momentum has you going forward and it is the most likely situation that you will pick up your pivot foot before pushing off with your lead foot. As long as the player doesn't blatently pick up the pivot foot to gain more ground before jumping with the lead foot, I wouldn't want it to be called traveling.

If you're a star and it's a "signature move" then it is not traveling. Ewing used to play without a pivot foot*, that's how great he was in the post.

I doubt you can easily find videos of it, but next game it could be fun to watch how many guys take extra steps while "catching" a pass. Especially if they're catching back to the basket and turning to shoot. Iverson used to take at least fifty* every time he caught it. Richard Hamilton will do quite a bit of shifting if he has to turn after a catch, there was a stretch they were calling him for it so he started making sure to start the turn before catching*. It's helped him because he's getting the shot off earlier and faster.

I think Pdub hits on why some allowances of traveling are allowed, not just for "stars", but because of physical limitations of humans. It is far more interesting to allow such leeway than to take so much movement out of the game.

*Anecdotes, no evidence.

Well, that's where things get interesting. By that stage, my family and friends would hold a teen-drama style intervention to get me to spend my money more wisely. I would storm out in tears, drive around for 2 hours with a bit of Death Cab for Cutie playing. Then i would walk back into my house. Friends and family turn in unison. I step out of the way. In walks my newly adopted African orphan, Terry.

Thus, i learn a lesson about the evils of the almighty dollar.

An hour and a half later Terry stabs and robs me.

I want to know some names of players who where in the league for 10 years aprox. but they never where somebody known and they played sparingly... but they were in an NBA roster...

For example: Kevin Ollie

both those videos are travels before they even dribble the ball

Here are some 90s fringe players that I can think of.

Chris Gatling
Elliot Perry
Felton Spencer
Donald Royal
Robert Pack
LaPhonso Ellis
Carlos Rogers
Kenny Gattison
Matt Geiger
Olden Polynice
Wesley Person

Yes, though they're seldom called in part because of the quickness of the play but mostly because they let a lot of travelling slide in the NBA, especially with the star players. Still, you do see a lot of players shuffling their feet when they catch passes or hopping after they catch a rebound without being whistled for a travel. I guess the approach is that it's a petty call and only the most obvious violations (that are actually noticed, anyway) are called.

Some of those guys saw significant PT at one time or another though. I'd add the following names to that list:

Marty Conlon
Brad Lohaus
Alton Lister
Jack Haley
John Crotty
Antonio Lang
Cherokee Parks
Andrew DeClercq
Pete Chilcutt
Duane Ferrell
David Wingate
Jim McIlvaine

Second... Oberto was never drafted an Scola in 2002 by San Antonio (he was 22 at the time) So they doesn't count
