No Hot/Cold System at the start of the game

Thu Oct 01, 2015 4:27 am

I have been playing MyGM for a while now and everything was going fine. Some players were hot and some were cold at the beginning of a game. Today I have decided to try quick match, and everybody is neutral. I hit the rematch, tried different teams, no luck. Still no hot/cold system at the beginning of the game. The players can get hot or cold during the game though, but I loved the system 2K implemented this year with and I wanted to have hot or cold players from the beginning.
Anyone else having this problem so I can report it in the bugs and glitch thread ?

I've been playing quick game and MyCareer and have yet to have anyone hot or cold from the start. I actually forgot it was even a feature because it has happened literally 0 times for me. Maybe it is a bug.

I found i mostly got cold players, especially off the bench every game i would get at least 2-4 players cold.

If it's a bug, I want it to not be fixed Lol. Or add a option to remove it

I managed to get the system back when I disconnected from the internet and played the game in offline mode. I personally want it online. But I guess they considered turning down the system for the moment, so I guess it's not that difficult to implement an on/off feature.

Hate hot/cold nonsense. I view that as part of the scripting/momentum process that screws up the game for me. It's my biggest complaint about the 2k franchise. I get and appreciate a little bit that the 2k guys want to update real life hot and cold NBA players within 2k16, but I think that throws the game off way too much, especially for people who don't follow the NBA regularly and know who's hot or who's cold.

A video game should, at all times, feel like it gives the player ultimate control. And I hate when things seem to be random in the game. My bad shot hits while my wide open great release shot misses.

They probably changed it under the hood. I can imagine people complained about it.

I don't necessarily like the system for quick game, but it has potential for season mode. Not liking the idea of it being completely random... it should at least be influenced by your actions in MyLeague/MyGM(ie: training choices, fatigue from how much you played a guy the previous game, etc.).

I don't entirely disagree, as it's very frustrating when something happens seemingly without rhyme or reason, or in the name of the AI screwing over the user. That said, there's merit in the idea, because it ties into something that we always say that we want: realism.

The reality is, you can do everything right, and still not get the result you're after. In real life, we'll see a team run a play to perfection, get a good shooter wide open, only for them to miss the shot. It happens. On the flip side, we'll also see a play break down, a player put up a wild shot, and it goes in. The real world is unpredictable, and outcomes aren't always desirable. If we truly want realism in basketball video games, there has to be some unpredictability, no guarantee for success.

I think part of the problem is, as much as we might love Da_Czar's creed of "Don't play video games, play basketball", at the end of the day...we are playing a video game. We want to beat that video game, and we expect that we will, if we do everything right. We're conditioned to think that, because traditionally, that's how video games have worked. Input action, get a result, positive or negative. And so, even though we wring our hands and complain about "cheese", we're upset when a certain action doesn't guarantee a result. Again, that's reality: you can do everything right, but still fall short.

Having said that, it does need to be implemented logically, and in a balanced way. I think it would be a good idea to be able to toggle the hot/cold system on and off, and be careful about implementing it across all game modes. Hot and cold streaks make sense in MyLEAGUE and MyGM; in exhibition and online head to head play, they're less desirable. In short, I think it's a good idea in theory, and goes hand in hand with adding an element of realism to the game, but the execution could be better.

Very well said. Especially the part about doing everything right and still missing. Maybe the true problem is that I'm a sore loser and should stop rage-quitting when my 25 year old brother (I'm 39) beats me now. He's due a little payback after I've beaten him for so many years in the Live series.

It's a very fine balance. Go too far for realism and you risk disconnecting the player from the result. Stick to total user control and every shot released from a skilled player goes in, resulting in 90% fg shooting, which is unrealistic. I think the easy fix is to have sliders or cpu-assist/momentum toggles so we can tailor the game to our personal preferences. Something that NBA Live seemed to do very well.

I can relate. As much as I'm a fan of realism in basketball games, and will gladly advocate for it, as the games have become more and more realistic, it's made me realise that my style of play may not have been quite as sim as I thought. At the very least, I was expecting to be able to do X, achieve Y, in terms of winning games at will.

Not to say that things can't be tweaked or the execution improved, because there are some potential issues with having a hot/cold system. But I think it's kind of been a case of be careful of what you wish for, and to borrow from TV Tropes, "reality is unrealistic".
