Re: Wayback Wednesday: Three Team Trades in NBA Live 2001

June 29th, 2016: Three Team Trades in NBA Live 2001

I'm still overseeing our ongoing server move, so as I mentioned in the Monday Tip-Off, I haven't been able to set aside a lot of time to prepare new original content this week. My hope is that everything will be in place and back to normal soon, but in the meantime, I wanted to get something out there for Wayback Wednesday, to give everyone something to either check out while they wait, or catch up on when the site is back up to speed. Specifically, I thought I'd write up a quick piece on three team trades in NBA Live 2001.

If you caught the first instalment of "Trivia Time" on the NLSC Podcast, you might have heard that NBA Live 2001 is, to date, the only game in the NBA Live series to feature three-team trade functionality. It's something that I think a lot of us would like to see return along with other roster editing functions, and since it is such a rare feature in the NBA Live series, it's worth looking back on.

So, let us indeed take a look back...way back...

Yeah I remember it was a great idea, but useless in Franchise mode. essentially it just allowed you to make 2 simultaneous 2-team trades with the CPU

That could be useful though, depending on the salaries and payrolls of the players and teams involved. You just had to be creative (and careful), since you couldn't suggest movement between two CPU-controlled teams.

Re: Wayback Wednesday: Free Agency in NBA Live 2004

Postby Andrew on Wed Jul 06, 2016 11:25 pm

July 6th, 2016: Free Agency in NBA Live 2004

The first couple of weeks of free agency tend to be the most exciting part of the offseason. Twenty years ago, Shaquille O'Neal departed the Orlando Magic for the Los Angeles Lakers, signing one of the first $100 million dollar contracts. Six years ago, it was LeBron James' turn to shock the basketball world, when he took his talents to South Beach. Just this week, Kevin Durant has just stirred up a mix of excitement and controversy with his announcement that he'll join the Golden State Warriors. Of course, we've been able to make our own shocking signings in video games since Franchise Mode in NBA Live 2000, which became Dynasty Mode in NBA Live 2004.

Speaking of NBA Live 2004's Dynasty Mode, it featured a couple of quirks when it came to free agency. While the mode added some nifty features that its predecessor lacked, it was afflicted by a couple of issues that did detract from the experience...or enhanced it, depending on how much you cared about realism and challenge. Thankfully, those issues were resolved in NBA Live 2005, but while we were all still playing NBA Live 2004, they were something that Dynasty gamers would consistently encounter.

Which issues am I referring to? Well, let's take a look back...way back...

Re: Wayback Wednesday: Yinka Dare Dominates NBA Jam TE

Postby Andrew on Wed Jul 13, 2016 11:50 pm

July 13th, 2016: Yinka Dare Dominates NBA Jam TE

Today, I present you with a game of NBA Jam Tournament Edition on PC, featuring Yinka Dare. Now, NBA Jam TE is one of my all-time favourite basketball video games, and in my opinion, one of the best arcade hoops games ever made. Conversely, and with all due respect, the late Yinka Dare's ranking among NBA alumni isn't quite as stellar. As I've mentioned before, his ratings in the PC version of NBA Jam TE are some of the most insulting you'll ever find in a basketball video game, having been severely nerfed from the Super Nintendo version. Outside of his Dunking, Blocking, and Power ratings, there isn't a lot to work with.

However, despite ratings that are mostly made up of ones and zeroes, it's possible to dominate with Yinka Dare in NBA Jam TE. In fact, not even a Clutch rating of zero can prevent Dare from getting the job done in crunch time! Don't believe me? Well, let's take a look back...way back...

Re: Wayback Wednesday: Yao Ming in Basketball Video Games

Postby Andrew on Wed Jul 20, 2016 11:39 pm

July 20th, 2016: Yao Ming in Basketball Video Games

On this day in 2011, Hall of Famer Yao Ming announced his retirement from the Houston Rockets and the NBA. It brought an end to a career that was unfortunately marred by injuries, but was nevertheless successful, and marvellous to watch. While he wasn't the first player over 7'3" to find a home and make a legitimate contribution in the NBA, he remains the only one to achieve true superstar status. Only Rik Smits comes close, and that comparison still greatly favours Yao, to say the least. On the court, he was so much more than just an attraction, an oddity, or another very tall player.

Just as Yao Ming was a star on the court, so too did his digital counterpart find success on the virtual hardwood. Yao was a handy player to have in a Dynasty or Association game, with his combination of height and skill making him a very formidable opponent in the paint. Since it's the anniversary of his retirement, I thought I'd take a look back at Yao Ming's history in basketball video games, offering up a few tidbits about his virtual counterpart, and providing a few screenshots through the years.

Let's take a look back...way back...

Re: Wayback Wednesday: Michael Jordan in NBA 2K11

Postby Andrew on Wed Jul 27, 2016 10:03 pm

July 27th, 2016: Michael Jordan in NBA 2K11

Michael Jordan is the greatest player in the history of basketball. There, that's a suitably controversial statement to open an article with, these days. For a long time, that was an acceptable assertion to make, but now it seems you're a bitter old hater if you dare to suggest that there are arguments in favour of teams and players from older eras being superior. Well, contrary to some of the comments that I've read on YouTube lately, I would disagree that LeBron James is "clearly better than Michael Jordan", and that the upcoming season will establish that "fact" once and for all. That's not a knock on LeBron, by the way; MJ just happened to be pretty good.

Anyway, that's a debate for another time. At the very least, most fans and analysts would agree that Michael Jordan is one of the best players we've ever seen, and one of the most significant and influential people in the history of basketball. During his career, he dazzled fans with his play, and his combination of highlights and success on the hardwood in turn sold a lot of merchandise. In retirement, his brand has remained just as strong. It's no surprise that Visual Concepts made him the first retired player to appear on the cover of their game, when he became the face of NBA 2K11.

Michael Jordan's appearance in NBA 2K11 was certainly a big deal, and definitely worth reflecting upon. So, let's take a look back...way back...

The exciting thing about Jordan in 2k11 wasn't so much his likeness, but they actually had his animations and it felt like he was in the game, as well as several others that were added. Where as currently they add legends, put them in baggy shorts, throw a couple wonky mix & match shot animations on them, and call it a day.

Re: Wayback Wednesday: The 50s All-Stars in NBA Live 2000

Postby Andrew on Thu Aug 04, 2016 1:01 am

August 3rd, 2016: The 50s All-Stars in NBA Live 2000

On this day in 1949, the Basketball Association of America merged with the National Basketball League to form what is now known as the National Basketball Association. While the NBA has gone from strength to strength in the decades that have followed, it often pays tribute to its heritage, from throwback jerseys to naming the 50 Greatest NBA Players of All-Time in 1997. Of course, the players from those early years are made known to younger NBA fans not only through documentaries and old highlights, but also basketball video games. Some seventeen years ago, those early stars appeared as the 50s All-Stars in NBA Live 2000.

Seeing as how I grew up watching the NBA in the 90s, I must admit that I was more excited about the 90s All-Stars, in particular the addition of Michael Jordan, who was making his first official appearance in an NBA Live game. I also had an appreciation for the players who were big in the 80s, as there was a fair amount of overlap with the 90s in that regard. Nevertheless, it was cool to see the 50s, 60s, and 70s also represented in NBA Live 2000 by the best players of those eras; well, most of them, anyway. Since it's the anniversary of the BAA-NBL merger, I thought I'd spotlight the 50s All-Stars team.

Let's take a look back...way back...

Re: Wayback Wednesday: Team USA Basketball (SEGA Genesis)

Postby Andrew on Wed Aug 10, 2016 10:55 pm

August 10th, 2016: Team USA Basketball (SEGA Genesis)

Whenever I'm deciding on what I want to talk about for Wayback Wednesday, it's generally either a game I've been meaning to review or discuss for some time, or a topic that's somehow related to the date or a current event. With the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro underway, and Team USA seeking another gold medal in basketball, it seems like as good a time as any to talk about Team USA Basketball for the SEGA Genesis.

For those who have never heard of it, Team USA Basketball is actually a spinoff of the NBA Playoffs series - EA's forerunner to NBA Live - and was the first game to feature the legendary Dream Team, long before NBA 2K13. Released exclusively for the SEGA Genesis in 1992, it's obviously very primitive compared to its successors, but what was it like, and how does it hold up today? I offer up my thoughts on this arguably lesser known EA basketball game, in a new video retrospective.

Let's take a look back...way back...

Re: Wayback Wednesday: Larry Bird in NBA Jam Tournament Edition

Postby Andrew on Thu Aug 18, 2016 12:07 am

August 17th, 2016: Larry Bird in NBA Jam Tournament Edition

The NBA Jam series is famous for its inclusion of secret players. From Will Smith in his Fresh Prince persona, to Mortal Kombat characters - excuse me, "kharacters" - Scorpion and Sub-Zero, a lot of special guests have hit the virtual hardwood for high-flying, arcade basketball action. Joining the cast of public figures, Midway developers, and NBA mascots in NBA Jam Tournament Edition was Boston Celtics great, Larry Bird.

Along with Hall of Famer Carol Blazejowski, Larry Legend is the only real former professional basketball player that is hidden and playable in NBA Jam TE. It's actually something that I wasn't aware of when I first got into the game all those years ago, as I never encountered him as an opponent after beating all of the NBA teams and seeing secret characters randomly appear as opponents. It wasn't until my family got the Internet and I was able to look up some codes for the PC version that I discovered he was in the game, and playable. He's also in the Super Nintendo version, though I wasn't aware of that particular code, either.

Since tomorrow will be the 24th anniversary of his retirement from the NBA, I thought I'd reflect on Larry Bird's presence in NBA Jam Tournament Edition. So, let's take a look back...way back...

Re: Wayback Wednesday: NBA Live 95 Nintendo Power Articles

August 24th, 2016: NBA Live 95 Nintendo Power Articles

Beyond retrospective articles and videos - and of course, actually dusting off retro video games to play them - there's another way for us gamers to get a nostalgia hit: old magazines and articles. To this day, I regret throwing out my entire collection of Nintendo Magazine System mags, as there are times when I'd love to look back on them and reminisce. With basketball video games coming as far as they have, it's interesting to look back on old reviews and previews to see the things that once excited us, as they often seem mundane many years later.

Recently, Arcane stumbled across a couple of Nintendo Power articles on NBA Live 95, the first game in the NBA Live series and a title that's widely considered to be a classic. For this week's Wayback Wednesday, I thought I'd share them with everyone, and offer up a few thoughts on their contents. So, let's take a look back...way back...

Re: Wayback Wednesday: NBA's Greatest in NBA 2K12

Postby Andrew on Thu Sep 01, 2016 12:18 am

August 31st, 2016: NBA's Greatest in NBA 2K12

I've been watching some classic NBA games recently, and it got me in the mood to play with some retro teams in NBA 2K. I can do that in NBA 2K16 of course, but only NBA 2K11 and NBA 2K12 have dedicated modes for the historic squads, namely the Jordan Challenge and NBA's Greatest respectively. After catching Michael Jordan's 63 point game against Larry Bird's Boston Celtics, I originally opted for NBA 2K11, with an eye towards finishing the Jordan Challenge games I never completed. When that didn't go so well, I turned my attention towards NBA 2K12, and my unfinished challenges in NBA's Greatest.

I'd ultimately complete my unfinished business, clearing all of the remaining challenges over the weekend. I found myself having a lot of fun, and the experience certainly made me appreciate NBA's Greatest all over again. In fact, it had me wishing that we still had some sort of mode for the classic teams in the newer games. Since I've finally completed all fifteen games and unlocked all of the included retro teams at long last, it only made sense to profile NBA's Greatest for this week's Wayback Wednesday feature.

I have NBA 2K12 too. No one is maintaining it on the URB, so i switched to 14 for more mods, except the fact that it runs horribly on my PC. 2K12 was the first NBA game I got for my PC, and I grew old from it after a little while, until I met NLSC and learned about mods. I hope we could do some modding back on that game.

Glad you enjoyed the article!

Unfortunately, there's not really any strings to pull here. I can try to touch base with HAWK23, though he's pretty busy these days. Aside from that, we could make an appeal to anyone who still has that part to upload it again, so that alternate arrangements can be made. Beyond that, it's well out of my hands, but I'll see what I can do.

Re: Wayback Wednesday: Courtside Comedy in NBA Live 2003

Postby Andrew on Wed Sep 07, 2016 11:14 pm

September 7th, 2016: Courtside Comedy in NBA Live 2003

Our (belated) 20th Anniversary of NBA Live content is on-going, and next up will be a retrospective of NBA Live 2003. Before we get to that, however, I wanted to profile one of the game's most notorious features: its "Courtside Comedy" cutscenes. On top of gameplay that wasn't quite as sim as most basketball gamers would've liked, NBA Live 2003 also took a more light-hearted approach to its atmosphere, with several cutscenes involving players joking around and goofing off.

While the comedic cutscenes weren't universally disliked, I think it's fair to say that most gamers were not sorry to see them gone in NBA Live 2004. For my part, I can see the humour, and I do have a certain amount of nostalgia for the sheer oddity of them, but they definitely didn't create the atmosphere that I wanted for NBA Live. Nevertheless, they are fun to look back on, especially because some of them could be truly ridiculous. Ahead of my detailed retrospective of NBA Live 2003, here are some of the most memorable courtside comedy cutscenes.

Let's take a look back...way back...

Re: Wayback Wednesday: Finishing The Jordan Challenge (Part 1)

September 14th, 2016: Finishing The Jordan Challenge (Part 1)

Going back to NBA 2K12 and completing the games of NBA's Greatest that I never finished has inspired me to revisit NBA 2K11, and take care of some unfinished business in the Jordan Challenge. I'd actually made a couple of attempts to play the Jordan Challenge games before going back to NBA 2K12, but found the gameplay too frustrating. Having spent a little more time with both games and reacquainted myself with the controls - while also avoiding doing the things that only work in more recent NBA 2K titles - I'm finding that I'm far better on the sticks, and the games are less frustrating...for the most part.

When I first bought NBA 2K11, I was still making the transition from NBA Live, and NBA 2K's controls felt very foreign. As such, I only completed three out of the ten challenges back in the day. Clearing the remaining challenges by hitting all of the necessary statistical marks was beyond my abilities as a relative newcomer to the series, and after some frustrating attempts, I ended up leaving them uncompleted. Now that I have some more experience with the series, and I've brushed up on NBA 2K11's controls, I'm giving the Jordan Challenge another try. In Part 1 of this challenge, I'm attempting The Shrug and the 1991 NBA Finals.

September 21st, 2016: Finishing The Jordan Challenge (Part 2)

NBA 2K17 is out now, so my retro gaming is temporarily on hold. However, before I got my hands on this year's release, I did manage to complete another couple of games in NBA 2K11's Jordan Challenge. I expect that I'll mostly be playing NBA 2K17 over the next couple of weeks, but my inner completionist is definitely eager to once again pick up NBA 2K11 in the not too distant future, so that I may continue taking care of my unfinished business.

In Part 2 of this feature, I'm tackling the challenges from Michael Jordan's second year in the league, and second-to-last year with the Chicago Bulls: The Arrival, and The Flu Game. Both contests were defining moments in the career of His Airness, with statistical marks that are tough to match. Needless to say, the eight minute quarters of the Jordan Challenge make them even tougher, especially The Arrival. Join me as I continue my quest to finally complete the Jordan Challenge, and unlock MJ: Creating a Legend without the cheat code!

September 28th, 2016: Finishing The Jordan Challenge (Part 3)

With only three games left to complete, I've almost finished the Jordan Challenge in NBA 2K11. As you'll know if you've caught the first two parts of this series, I haven't been completing them sequentially. Instead, I've been playing through them according to how difficult and frustrating I expect them to be. My goal has been to avoid getting burned out on NBA 2K11 or the Jordan Challenge before I can finish it; to that end, I've tried to leave the harder games - or at least, what strikes me as the harder games - until last.

On one hand, mission accomplished, as I've been eager to keep playing through the Jordan Challenge even though NBA 2K17 is out now. On the other hand, the time has come to play through those final challenges, if I want to complete the mode. In Part 3, I'm taking on 69 Points (the game against the Cleveland Cavaliers in which MJ scored his career high) and Father's Day Victory (Game 6 of the 1996 NBA Finals). Read on to find out how they went down.

Postby Andrew on Wed Oct 05, 2016 11:44 pm

October 5th, 2016: Finishing The Jordan Challenge (Part 4)

Game 6 of the 1998 NBA Finals came down to one final shot by Michael Jordan, so it seems only appropriate that my attempts to go back and finish the Jordan Challenge in NBA 2K11 come down to that same game. The last challenge standing between me and finally finishing the mode (and unlocking MJ: Creating a Legend) all these years later is Michael's Last Dance, which involves re-creating the performance that clinched MJ's sixth NBA title.

Now, the outcome of my game probably isn't going to come down to one final shot, but out of all the games in the Jordan Challenge, this is the one that I expect I'll need to attempt at least a few times before I complete it. I've tried it a few times in the past, and have always come up short on one statistical mark. However, it's time to give it another try, in order to finally finish the Jordan Challenge. Join me as I re-live Michael's Last Dance with the Chicago Bulls...most likely more than once.

Re: Wayback Wednesday: Recreating Magic & Bird's NBA Debuts

Postby Andrew on Wed Oct 12, 2016 10:05 pm

October 12th, 2016: Recreating Magic & Bird's NBA Debuts

On this day in 1979, NBA history was made on opening night. In a 114-106 victory over the Houston Rockets, the Boston Celtics' Chris Ford made the very first three-pointer in league history with 3:48 remaining in the first quarter. In that same game, the legendary Larry Bird made his professional debut, scoring 14 points to go along with ten rebounds and five assists. Elsewhere, Bird's rival Magic Johnson also made his NBA debut, scoring 26 points and enjoying a 103-102 victory over the San Diego Clippers, courtesy of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's gamewinning skyhook.

The arrival of Magic Johnson and Larry Bird, along with the debut of Michael Jordan five years later, propelled the NBA into a new golden age. All three legends appeared on separate covers for NBA 2K12, but since I've already talked about NBA's Greatest in a previous Wayback Wednesday feature, I thought I'd do something a little different to mark the occasion. Using HAWK23's amazing Ultimate Base Roster, I replayed the NBA debuts of Magic Johnson and Larry Bird using NBA 2K14 PC. Could I replicate their numbers and success?

With the help of UBR, let's take a look back...way back...

Postby Andrew on Wed Oct 19, 2016 8:35 pm

October 19th, 2016: Dynasty Cutscenes in NBA Live 2004

The next game that I'll be looking back on as part of our ongoing (and belated) 20th Anniversary of NBA Live celebrations is NBA Live 2004. It's one of my all-time favourite games in the series, and a title that I know a lot of other long-time basketball gamers also remember fondly. As I'll discuss in my forthcoming retrospective, NBA Live 2004 did a great job in correcting course after NBA Live 2003 was skewed too much towards a casual style, with more realistic gameplay and the inclusion of sliders for the first time in the NBA Live series.

If there's one thing that most people remember about NBA Live 2004 though, it's the cutscenes in the newly rebranded Dynasty Mode. Whereas reactions to the "Courtside Comedy" cutscenes in NBA Live 2003 were mixed at best, it seemed like most of us felt that the Dynasty Cutscenes really added to the atmosphere, bringing life to events that were taking place in the menus. Given that it's such a memorable part of the game, I thought I'd talk a little bit about it, ahead of my full NBA Live 2004 retrospective.

Let's take a look back...way back...

Re: Wayback Wednesday: October 26th NBA Debuts

Postby Andrew on Wed Oct 26, 2016 10:54 pm

October 26th, 2016: October 26th NBA Debuts

The 2017 NBA season has just tipped off, with a couple of big names making their first appearances for new teams, and a few rookies making their league debut. While the start of a new season is a time to look forward to what will hopefully be another great year of basketball, it's not uncommon to take the opportunity to look back on the debuts of all-time greats. If you look up "On This Date" lists for October and November, you'll usually see the debuts of some of the biggest names in basketball history among the dates that are noted.

On this particular date - October 26th - Hall of Famers and 1992 Dream Team members Michael Jordan, Charles Barkley, John Stockton, and Patrick Ewing all made their NBA debut; Jordan, Barkley, and Stockton in 1984, and Ewing in 1985. For this week's Wayback Wednesday, I thought I'd share some screenshots of those players' first appearances in basketball video games, as well as their last appearances as active NBA players. Of course, all four players appear in NBA 2K17, as members of the aforementioned Dream Team.

November 2nd, 2016: Jordan Challenge Highlight Reel

A few weeks ago, I ran a series of Wayback Wednesday articles documenting my attempt to complete the Jordan Challenge in NBA 2K11. I was ultimately successful, taking care of my unfinished business and unlocking MJ: Creating a Legend without resorting to the cheat code. Despite some frustrating moments, I ultimately enjoyed the experience, and felt a sense of accomplishment when I finally completed all ten challenges.

While playing through the Jordan Challenge, I captured several videos of moments that I really enjoyed. I didn't want those clips to go to waste, so I've put together a highlight reel from the seven challenges I went back and completed for the feature. Check it out below, or catch it here on our YouTube channel if you can't see the embedded video.

Re: Wayback Wednesday: Remembering Roster Players

Postby Andrew on Wed Nov 09, 2016 9:06 pm

November 9th, 2016: Remembering Roster Players

The issue of missing players isn't as prominent as it was in the early days of basketball gaming. Video games have become a huge industry, authenticity is the name of the game, and the licensing agreement with the NBA Players Association ensures that all active players are represented in NBA Live and NBA 2K. These days, active players who aren't included at launch are added via official roster updates, so most of the issues with missing players involve historical players that couldn't be licensed. Fortunately, as the addition of Steve Nash in the latest NBA 2K17 roster update demonstrates, that doesn't have to be a permanent problem either.

As I've discussed in previous articles, this wasn't always the case. Due to certain players retaining full control over their likeness rights, and sometimes signing exclusive deals with specific developers, some of the biggest names in basketball have been missing from classic hoops games. In some cases, however, they didn't leave a vacant spot on their team's roster. Some games elected to include placeholder players, which many old school basketball gamers came to call Roster Players, after the name they were given in various editions of NBA Live.

Roster Players have an interesting legacy in basketball gaming, so let's take a look back...way back...

Re: Wayback Wednesday: My Player in NBA 2K10

Postby Andrew on Wed Nov 16, 2016 9:10 pm

November 16th, 2016: My Player in NBA 2K10

On this day in 2001, the NBA D-League (then known as the NBDL) tipped off its inaugural season with the Greenville Groove hosting the North Charleston Lowgators. The league may have changed its name, and neither of those teams is still active, but over the past fifteen years the D-League has become a stable farm league for the NBA, with several noteworthy alumni. Despite its growth and increasing importance to the NBA, to date the D-League hasn't had much of a presence in basketball video games. However, it played a significant role in NBA 2K10's My Player mode, the first incarnation of what is now known as MyCAREER.

Since it's the fifteenth anniversary of the inaugural D-League season, and I've been playing quite a bit of MyCAREER in NBA 2K17, I thought I'd look back at My Player in NBA 2K10, while also touching on the D-League's role in the mode. The possibility of starting out in the D-League is something that quite a few gamers have expressed an interest in seeing return, and the prospect of multiple career paths is something that I find intriguing as well. My Player itself has undergone a lot of improvements on top of being rebranded into MyCAREER, but what was that first version of the mode like?

Let's take a look back...way back...

Postby Andrew on Wed Nov 23, 2016 9:42 pm

November 23rd, 2016: NBA Live Championship Screenshots

When posting bulletins about the NBA Champions around ten years ago, I included screenshots of the winning team taken from the current NBA Live game. With the standalone Playoffs mode, it was easy enough to fire up the PC version, load up the latest NLSC roster update, and sim through a postseason. Because NBA Live's simulation engine could be unpredictable, I usually had to place star players on the injured reserve so that the appropriate teams could make it through to the NBA Finals, and the correct team then win the championship.

I usually held off on capturing the screenshots until the series was close to being decided, so that I could make sure the teams were playing in the correct venue (and in one instance, wearing the correct jerseys). I came across those old NBA Live championship screenshots while digging through my archives recently, and I thought that they'd be fun to share for this week's Wayback Wednesday.

November 30th, 2016: The Original NLSC Roster Updates

Years before I was maintaining the NLSC roster updates for NBA Live, Tim and Lutz were creating the site's original patches. We've seen a lot of fantastic roster updates over the years that have brought attention to the NLSC and been very popular in the community, and that great work certainly continues to this day. However, when you're talking about the roster updates that made this site what it's become and inspired so many other people to get into the hobby, you can't go past those original releases by Tim and Lutz.

Those roster updates are still available in our Downloads section, and if you're ever in the mood for some retro basketball gaming, I'd definitely recommend downloading them. If you're newer to the NLSC community though - and especially if you've mostly been involved with the NBA 2K modding scene - it might be difficult to appreciate how important and influential those original NLSC rosters were. While I do encourage you to experience them for yourself if you can, I feel it's important that those early roster updates get their due, especially in light of 2016 marking our 20th Anniversary.

December 7th, 2016: NBA Legends in NBA Live 2000

Today, December 7th 2016, is Larry Bird's 60th birthday; Happy Birthday, Larry Legend! To mark the occasion, I've been trying to think of basketball video gaming topics that are related to the Boston Celtics great. Since I've already talked about Bird's presence in NBA Jam Tournament Edition as a secret player, that idea is out. Glancing at the list of topics that I've compiled for future Wayback Wednesday features, I noticed one that's probably overdue, and certainly has ties to Bird: NBA Legends in NBA Live 2000.

I remember that many of us were very excited to hear that a selection of NBA Legends from the 1950s, 1960s, 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s would be featured in NBA Live 2000. The long-awaited addition of Michael Jordan was obviously a huge selling point, but the inclusion of Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, Wilt Chamberlain, Julius Erving, Isiah Thomas, and other all-time greats, also came as very welcome news for basketball gamers who wanted to see some historical content in NBA Live.

It's the kind of content in basketball video games that helps us reminisce, so it's only appropriate that we take a look back...way back...

Postby Andrew on Wed Dec 14, 2016 8:54 pm

December 14th, 2016: 1000 People Online in NBA Live 07

NBA Live 07 is ten years old now. If you've been around the community for a long time and remember playing it back in the day, don't worry; I feel old too. As I'll be discussing in some upcoming features for our 20th Anniversary of NBA Live content, whether you're talking about the PC/PlayStation 2 or Xbox 360 version, NBA Live 07 was a release that had quite a lot of issues. It was around this time that the NBA Live series really began to falter, allowing the NBA 2K series to not only establish itself as a superior product, but also close the gap in sales across all platforms. But that's something I'll cover in those upcoming articles.

Today, I'm talking about something that I feel is an interesting footnote about the Xbox 360 version of NBA Live 07. One of NBA Live 07's Xbox Live Achievements was awarded for being one of at least a thousand people online and in the game at the same time. It's a somewhat unique idea for an Achievement or Trophy in a basketball video game, and it's safe to say that there weren't a lot of gamers who ended up attaining it.

What was the deal with this somewhat unusual Achievement? Let's take a look back...way back...

December 21st, 2016: NBA Live 2005 GamePro Preview

The next retrospective that I'll be posting as part of our ongoing 20th Anniversary of NBA Live content will take a look back at NBA Live 2005. The second release during a strong three year run for the series, NBA Live 2005 is still considered to be one of EA Sports' best basketball titles. That's something I'll obviously be examining in greater detail in my retrospective, but for now, I wanted to share something that I came across in my archives: a scan of a GamePro magazine article from way back in April of 2004, which offered up a quick preview of NBA Live 2005.

It's always interesting to reflect on previews of basketball video games and our reactions to them, and then compare to them how the games actually turned out and how we felt once we got to play them ourselves. There's obviously been plenty of time for the dust to settle on NBA Live 2005, so let's take a look back...way back...

Re: Wayback Wednesday: Coaches in NBA Live 2003

Postby Andrew on Wed Dec 28, 2016 11:57 pm

December 28th, 2016: Coaches in NBA Live 2003

As I mentioned in my retrospective of the game, NBA Live 2003 was the first release in the NBA Live series to feature real coaches on the sidelines. It may seem like a trivial thing these days, but back then, it was a big deal to finally get that kind of detail in basketball video games. Of course, when we look back on a game like NBA Live 2003, it not only provides a snapshot of what basketball gaming was like at the time, but also serves as a time capsule of the real NBA. Fire up the game today, and you might find yourself saying "I remember him!", or "I forgot he played for them!"

Needless to say, the same goes for coaches. Looking back at the coaches roaming the sidelines in the default rosters of NBA Live 2003, there are some familiar names, and a couple of others who probably haven't been in the consciousness of most NBA fans for some time. As such, I thought it might be fun to see how the sidelines have changed since head coaches first appeared in NBA Live. Let's take a look back...way back...

Re: Wayback Wednesday: Michael Jordan's 30,000th Point

Postby Andrew on Wed Jan 04, 2017 10:12 pm

January 4th, 2017: Michael Jordan's 30,000th Point

On this day in 2002, Michael Jordan became the fourth player in NBA history to score 30,000 points. His Airness did so as a member of the Washington Wizards - yes, I know I'm not supposed to mention that - but funnily enough, he set the mark in a win over the Chicago Bulls, the team with which he won six NBA championships and established himself as the greatest player of all-time. Although the career scoring feat is more historically significant, that game is perhaps more often remembered for a sequence which ended with Michael Jordan emphatically blocking Ron Mercer.

As I noted in my retrospective of NBA Live 2002, and a few other articles, it was the first game in the NBA Live series in which Michael Jordan appeared as an active player. He'd appeared in EA's earlier basketball titles, but apart from his Roster Player stand-in, he was absent from NBA Live during his second run with the Bulls. To mark the fifteenth anniversary of MJ's milestone game, I thought that I'd dust off NBA Live 2002 once more, and try to replicate it. Let's take a look back...way back...

Re: Wayback Wednesday: LeBron James' Free Agency in NBA Live 10

January 11th, 2017: LeBron James' Free Agency in NBA Live 10

Since I'm still working on a few retrospectives for Wayback Wednesday (as well as our ongoing 20th Anniversary of NBA Live content), I've been looking through the archives for something fun and interesting to share with you this week. Combing through an old folder of images, I came across a collection of screenshots of LeBron James in NBA Live 10. I took them in May 2010 for an article that was looking ahead to his upcoming free agency, and speculating upon which jersey he might be wearing come the 2011 season. Since LeBron announced his number change prior to his free agency, he's wearing number six in all of them.

As it happened, both LeBron James' career and the fortunes of the NBA Live series took an infamous turn just a few months later. Let's take a look back...way back...

Re: Wayback Wednesday: The Temple in NBA Live 06 & 07

Postby Andrew on Wed Jan 18, 2017 11:01 pm

January 18th, 2017: The Temple in NBA Live 06 & 07

Whenever a basketball video game makes the leap to a new generation of gaming hardware, there's usually some sort of feature or gimmick that underlines the fact that it's a new era. The jump to the Xbox 360 marked the start of a difficult time for the NBA Live series, with the 360 version of NBA Live 06 being something of a disappointment. I'll go into more details about the game in my forthcoming retrospective for our 20th Anniversary of NBA Live content, but one very cool feature that the game did boast was its practice gym: The Temple.

The Temple - which also appeared in NBA Live 07 - wasn't just eye-catching in design, but also a somewhat revolutionary take on the existing practice mode. Let's take a look back...way back...

It would be cool if you did a Wayback Wednesday on NBA Fastbreak 98 (Visual Concepts game, kind of the original 2k). I was 100% hooked on that game.

I don't have that one, but I might see if I can track down a copy without breaking the budget.

Re: Wayback Wednesday: The Hangar in NBA Live 10

Postby Andrew on Wed Jan 25, 2017 9:56 pm

January 25th, 2017: The Hangar in NBA Live 10

Since I took a look back at The Temple in NBA Live 06 and NBA Live 07 last week, I thought that for week's Wayback Wednesday, I'd reminisce about The Hangar in NBA Live 10. While The Hangar wasn't as quite as revolutionary as The Temple - it was a continuation of the same concept, after all - it was nevertheless one of NBA Live's most memorable practice arenas. It was a pretty cool design to say the least, and it also included a few nifty features that I remembered when I recently fired up NBA Live 10 on Xbox 360 to test out my new capture card.

The Hangar is certainly one of my favourite practice arenas in the NBA Live series, so join me as I take a look back...way back.

NBA Live 10 will always be special to me since it was the first basketball video game I ever played. The Hangar was a nice way of introducing the game, especially to a newbie. I always liked to conclude long play sessions by shooting around in the Hangar. My favorite player to use was Kwame Brown.

You had a NBA Live 10 dynasty with Rockets, right? I was a huge follower of it

Definitely a shame we didn't get NBA Live 10 on PC. I agree there'd likely still be mods for it, if we did.

Re: Wayback Wednesday: My 1996 Season Patch for NBA Live 2004

Postby Andrew on Wed Feb 01, 2017 10:08 pm

February 1st, 2017: My 1996 Season Patch for NBA Live 2004

Last week, I wrote an article talking about the lure of roster modding. As I explained in that feature, while modding in general is something I don't do as much as I used to, there's always the temptation to get back into it. I really did enjoy making those current roster updates for so many years, as well as the occasional special project. One such project was my 1996 season patch for NBA Live 2004, which thanks to the contributions of some of our best art modders at the time, turned out to be reasonably comprehensive...at least compared to some of my previous retro season patches.

To this day, it remains one of my favourite patches that I've made for NBA Live 2004, or indeed, any other game. I recently came across some old preview images of the patch in my archives, and figured it would be fun to share them, along with a few reflections on the mod. Let's take a look back...way back...

Re: Wayback Wednesday: NBA Live PC Mod

Postby Andrew on Wed Feb 08, 2017 10:23 pm

February 8th, 2017: NBA Live PC Mod

Inspired by last week's dig through the archives, I went rummaging again to see what else I could find. My search yielded some preview screenshots for the NBA Live PC mod, which became the NLSC's comprehensive roster update for the PC version of NBA Live 06 for several years. Since I enjoyed looking back at my 1996 season mod for NBA Live 2004 last week, I thought that I'd do the same for a current roster update that I maintained for one of my all-time favourite games in the series. With NBA Live 06 being next up in our 20th Anniversary of NBA Live retrospectives, it also seemed fitting.

So, why did the mod bear that name, and how did it come about? Let's take a look back...way back...
