When Jaosming asked us to come up with ideas for the now cancelled "Storyline/Association..." project, aside from writing up a 6 page wishlist, I also thought as a side project they could make a "MyTeam" type game.
With the release of Reditor, perhaps an NLSC MyTeam is even more possible than ever? It's a much smaller project.
Now that I've stopped thinking about Association ideas, I now can't stop thinking about this "MyTeam" idea. Here's a few ideas and points I came up with (scroll down to the next post to see what I think of what could happen):
At the start of each "game" of "MyTeam" we get a randomized team. Except it's not a bunch of garbage so we have to spend VCs and/or real money. Randomizing the teams with a normal distribution would give each player an average team to start with.
For example I could have: Young Baron Davis, Gerald Henderson, young Gerald Wallace, rookie Thaddeus Young, old Dikembe Mutombo , Ben Gordon of ’09, Tayshaun Prince
Someone else could have Kobe, Okafor and a bunch of scrubs
There could be some type of challenge like the Road to the Playoffs challenge so there are actually distinct "seasons" (have not put too much thought into this).
The NLSC community can create fantasy teams that pose different challenges (like a "small ball" team or a "best of injury prone" team or a "best of 2000's Spurs"...) to throw in the mix. Past teams and legendary teams would also be in the mix.
With a massive ultimate base roster that may be ported to 2K13 (even without that we currently have an 84 team roster), we could potentially have a roster of several hundred to choose from.
Rather than getting players through opening "booster packs" only, trades with other players online should be the main way of getting great players.
Real time drafts (still a very raw idea. Unsure how we get draft picks apart from in booster packs. Perhaps booster packs would include a lot of picks rather than players. Maybe we have to pay for booster packs instead of using it on contracts for good players). Every once in a while (depending on the number of users), we can cash in "picks" for lottery balls. Perhaps every single pick would be determined by lottery balls.
Real time "free agency" so we can battle it out (although I still haven't thought of how the player would "choose" which team to join).
Contract lengths to prevent every single team from being some combination of multiple legends.
The option to export your best teams (along with tendencies) and allow other users to download other users' teams.
Player regression to make players worth less as they age and to prevent the "every team is identical multiple legend team" problem from occurring.
Player improvement with drills that you can purchase that are more expensive if your ability is already high and is randomized to prevent players from getting too good too easily.
It'd overall be a nice little economics experiment. Each time a player "retires", depending on what's released, how the values of players change could be interesting.
I understand servers may not be entirely possible. Perhaps the tool could just be something that edits rosters, prevents players from cheating, enforces rules and exports/imports players. We'd trade/draft players on the NLSC website and, occasionally, NLSC would release players through "drafts".
Would you play this? Do you have any more ideas?
