Activate boxed version on Steam

Wed Oct 03, 2012 11:25 am

Hey guys, a small Q. I found a distributor in my country who has the game on boxed copies for PC (lucky me!) and for a decent prize (just around $10 bucks higher than DD), thing is I'm channeling all my gaming through Steam and Digital downloads (Origin, etc.) right now, so I want to know if its possible to, once the game is released on Steam (October 16th) I can activate the game legally through a code.

If it isn't possible I might wait for 2 weeks and get it through Steam, discs are so useless.

as it stands right now, I would not count on the game activating through Steam.

It is possible that 2K may let you do that with Steam, but I would doubt it since no other game was able to.

Thanks for the quick response Jao, it was exactly what I was searching for. I won't be getting it then, 2 weeks it is (N) ...

It isn't possible I don't think. I bought NBA 2K10, 11 and 12 all 3 Retail DVD versions here in the UK.
None of them CD Keys activated for me on Steam!

Only Retail DVD games that are Steamworks activate on Steam.
Plus there isn't any real advantage getting the Steam version as it doesn't support Steam achievements anyway. If your concern is that you want to chat with friends, organize clan/leagues then you can download Xfire for that matter. Xfire would do the exact same job if not better than Steam.

Otherwise there isn't any other particular advantage with the Steam version. Unless you don't have a DVD drive. :P
I am gonna buy the Retail version this Friday official UK release. You won't lose anything. I always like to keep a collection of my PC games physically!
Plus you get a manual booklet with instructions for the game, which is handy unlike the Steam version.

I hate DVD's. They scratch, they use up space, they can be lost, they can be stolen.

Steam is much more simple, I manage my whole library of games through digital downloads right now, I vowed to not buy another disc again, yet this 2 week delay had me thinking, but I'd rather wait and then have a much more simple gaming experience (just click and play).
