My Career mode, PC shuts down.

Talk about NBA 2K13 here.

My Career mode, PC shuts down.

Postby matthewpark84 on Mon May 06, 2013 8:19 pm

Tried to look for similar scenario of my problem here but haven't found any. Anyway, i've been playing nba 2k13 career mode for quite some time. I haven't encountered any problems at all. Until 2 days ago, when i tried loading my saved game in career mode, in the middle of the game my PC suddently shuts down. my pc is plugged in, anti virus is disabled, no currently running program (other than 2k13). Haven't loaded any new mods. So i tried play a different game mode, and it didn't shut down. I tried loading an earlier saved game (2 games before my recent saved game), but it still shuts down. I tried to simulate (play next key game) 2 games were simulated and the game did not shut down. Normally games crashes to desktop, but what i've been experiencing is my pc shuts down. I haven't downgraded my unit, and i used to play the game with no lags whatsover (except when my unit is unplugged and running in battery mode).

Does anyone have a clue on what's causing the problem? I would greatly appreciate your constructive suggestions.

Thanks in advance!

Have you updated anything else on your system? Any similar issues with any other games?

i'm just playing 2k13 in my pc. As far as i know i haven't received windows updates these past few days. What i do remember is my game controller was not working so i have to buy a new one and when i started using it the game shuts down. but when i try to disconnect the controller and use the keyboard instead, pc still shuts down so i'm guessing it's not about the game controller.

The PC shutting down shouldn't be a software issue. Try running another game that will stress your PC, something heavy, if you have such a game, or a benchmark like FurMark or 3DMark. If it shuts down, it's probably the power supply not having enough juice anymore, or since we're talking about a laptop, maybe too much dust and/or dieing fans is raising the CPU temperatures beyond the safety threshold and the PC shuts itself down in order to protect the hardware. So grab a CPU temperature monitor program while you're at it.

have you tried what Leftos said in the post? If you already did, would like to hear from you if it worked. Thanks!

Yeah I tried but it still crashes. It seems to me that it crashes only in the 3rd quarter after a dunk. Dunno why.
Edit: Maybe it has something to do with substitutes.

No my PC can easily handle the 2k13 requirements. The first months I was able to play it without any problems. This issue appeared suddenly.

.

Same here, PC meets recommended requirements. And before i used to play it as well without hassle.

When i try to run nba 2k13 last night it took about up until 3rd qtr before the PC shuts down, when i reopen the same save game again, just after the tip off it shuts down again earlier than expected

It's overheating then.

Took your PC up to the 3rd quarter to reach the temperature where it will auto shut down and when you loaded it up again it shuts down just after tip off because the CPU is still in that temperature range where it's close to an auto shut down.

Might be a dusty/faulty fan or worn out thermal paste, which is possible even if 'THE GAME USED TO RUN FLAWLESSLY BEFORE!'

Definitely overheating. Put a fan on it and see I'd it still happens. You might need to prop the laptop up who'll lureleaving some space for air flow. You'll need some creativity to do that. Maybe some video game cases or DVD cases on the front and back edges and then a fan blowing down on the side. If it works, invest in a laptop coupler.

It's not overheating problem. My PC does not overheat, it's temperature is constant, the problem is in the game. There is some error that makes PC to shut down. My computer also turn off in 4th quarter, when the time on game reaches 1 minute to the end of a game. When I simulate the game it's not crashing, and I continue to play. Then it works fine for couple of next games, but suddenly, again, PC shuts down in some game in exactly 4th quarter when tje time reaches 1 minute to the end. It's not overheating I checked it. If the temperature is so high, it would not turn of in the EXACT same point every time. Since this problem is not happening only to me, it is obvious that the bug is in the game.

AFAIK, worst software error that could happen in Windows would be to go to a BSOD and either stay there or reboot, depending on your settings. If the PC shuts down, it sounds like it's a fail-safe in the hardware that tries to keep the components from damaging themselves.

Have you overclocked your CPU/GPU? What's the temperatures you're getting during the 4th quarter of games on both the CPU and GPU?

No, I haven't overclock CPU or GPU. I played games that demand even higher system requirements and never had a temperature problem. My old PC had that problem, I know how it reacts. First it start to make beep sound to notice you that the temperature is high, then it beeps more often. But even that PC never turned off. I played more than 30 NBA games to the end with no problem at all, and now suddenly when I reach exactly 1 minute to the end of the game, the pc turn off. What is the possibility that the PC overheat always in the same moment every time? If it's temperature is high, when I play the game again instantly it would turn off before 4th quarter. Maybe some patch will fix it...

No patch is coming. It does sound suspicious if it is happening at the same point every time. I would be guessing that it is a hardware problem as well. My computer doesn't beep but it does have a fail safe that will auto shutdown the computer. My older computer just lowered the clocks and voltage of the processor and gpu until my computer came to a crawl. What I would do when that happens is ALT+TAB back to the desktop, let it cool off for a few minutes by leaving it idle, then jump back into the game until it happened again, then repeat.

You can find out whether this is a problem with the game or if it's overheating. Play an nba today game or quick game but change the quarter length to 2 or 3 minutes. Play through the game and see if your computer shuts down with 1 minute left in the 4th quarter. If it doesn't, it's probably overheating. If it does, try deleting the game cache files in your "\Users\Profile_Name\AppData\Roaming\2K Sports\NBA 2K13\Cache" folder.

It's overheating. I know it's hard to accept that. Probably the components of your laptop have already sustained damage which was not yet present when you played the game "flawlessly". You'll even notice that when you play other demanding games. You will now notice a stutter which you did not experience before. Laptops do not beep when they are about to shut down. Just like what Leftos said, it's a fail-safe which prevents the laptop from burning itself. Try monitoring your temperatures through HWmonitor.

I don't play it on laptop, I never said that. I have desktop PC. Here, I will upload a picture to show you that the temperature is ok. http://postimg.org/image/ocfmc7eup/full/ (Max temperature for this processor is 74 C) Other games still work fine, for example SKYRIM works with no problem at all. If heat is the problem it would turn off not just in one game, and again, at the EXACT SAME MOMENT every time.

Did you try different quarter lengths? Does it always shut down with 1 minute left in the 4th quarter no matter the quarter length? Even if it's set at 2 or 3 minutes per quarter?
