level of detail (lod) adjustment for 2k12

Thu Apr 05, 2012 11:51 pm

i posted this over at OS in teh pc section, but i know there are a lot of smart pc owners that post here so i wanted to be sure you all saw it :)

i just recently discovered that there is a 'hidden' player detail level that can be set through the 2k12 config file. inside the config, i changed player detail from '0' (which is high in-game) to 4. i also changed the stadium detail level to low. 2k screwed this setting up - high is low and low is high.

anyway, my point is that with the alteration of player lod from zero to four, the increase in detail is very noticeable. after i did this, i forced global LOD adjustment through ati tray tools (would be a diff app for nvidia owners) from 0 (default) to -3.

i must say, the level of detail on players is now insane. minus the shading/shaders/lighting or w/e it's called, the players now look more detailed on the pc more than ever on xbox. you guys should give this a shot. in addition to any graphical mods you may be using, these changes can make your game look really, really good.

so yeah, player lod should be set to 4 in the config (lord knows why because a setting of zero equals high quality, 1 equals medium and 2 equals low - i haven't tried using a setting of three), stadium lod set to '0', lock your config file to read only and also force global lod to your liking - i prefer -1.5 or -3. before sure to use negative values and not positive.

i know most of this is old news, but with the addition of global lod adjustment player models just look sick.

good luck!

by the way, does anyone know what these config values change in-game?

Very interesting. Can you throw up some screens. I'm at work and can't test this out currently.

That's odd. My game looks like the better screen normally.

if you have an ati card, you can force global lod adjustments through ati tray tools or radeonpro. both are free and can be found on google. i don't think catalyst control center features it.

if you're an nvidia user, you'll have to google around for it.

For anyone who is not sure what LOD is-
From RadeonPro-

Texture LOD
Control texture LOD (level of detail). Negative values produce sharper textures, but can introduce shimmering on textures while in movement. Positive values can help on shimmering removal, but high values can produce blurry textures.
The recommended setting is 0.

Nvidia users can go here and download the Nvidia Inspector tool to change the LOD bias.

It looks like your biggest problem was that the game wasn't using the highest shaders for some reason.

turns out it was catalyst ai doing the graphical downgrade and yes, you were right PDub - cat ai messes with shaders to improve performance. with cat ai now off, and lod at a negative, the graphics are simply stunning. too bad i suck at this game now after being away in sedona for a week haha.
