Re: NBA 2K12 PS3/360 Demo Discussion

Downloaded demo & it's got a much better feel than the 2k11 demo, which left we underwhelmed. It's got a little bit of a NBA 2K11 meets NBA Live 10 feel for some reason.

Anyways, a few notes from my couple of 4 minute quarters before I deleted the demo:

    - On the opening tip the ball bounced a bit behind Kidd and he did a bit of a jump stop to get it & I think it was Lebron who went flying through & ended up sliding over due to momentum. I thought it was a great touch. Shame their was no replay option otherwise I would've captured it.

    - Looks the best I've seen on PS3 for NBA2K.

    - Like many others, it's going to take a while to get use to all the new controls. I'll definitely be doing all the training camp stuff.

    - Momentum seems a little better than 2K11.

    - They seem to have got rid of those stupid turnovers on short passes in your own half court when inbounding the ball (Y)

    - Dwayne Wade is a killer. From playing the game, 2K did a great job showing that it is Wade's team (Y) He draws lots of fouls and will be hard to contain.

    - Might have been game style &/or difficulty, but far too many user steals.

    - No-look CPU steals gone (Y)

    - Player faces look better

    - Crowd atmosphere seems a bit better

    - Still feel like I get caught up in animations at times but not as bad as previous 2K's

    - CPU AI seems to play a smarter & use pump fakes (Y)

    - Although the game looks to have a good base & I'd need to see it in sim game style first, it looks like it'll need slider tweaks but should be good (Y)

This isn't a whole new game, as people say. But that's a good thing. There have been times in past years where games, including some of the basketball games, got close to excellence. People sent in their wishes for the following year. The wishes came true, but some of the good stuff was lost so the next game still wasn't excellent.

It's like a guy eating a hot dog. He enjoys it, but wishes there were mustard for the next time. He returns to the hot dog stand and discovers they now have mustard. Hurrah! But they also changed the hot dog brand for special garlic hot dogs that don't taste good. If only they could have added mustard to the plain hot dog.

For 2011 2K kept the same good stuff from last year, with some major improvements and a lot of new features such as expanded legends. Sure it won't be perfect, but the demo shows a lot of improvements such as in the balance between superstars, stars and role players in both human and AI control. The scoring may be crazy in the demo, but LeBron and Wade are doing the LeBron and Wade work for the Heat. As someone mentioned, it's a lot better than seeing Chalmers scoring the bulk of the baskets. The hot dog is still good. But now we get five types of mustard to go with it.

A few more notes from more demo play.

- Not sure if I've ever before seen this happen in a 2K basketball. I poked the ball away from Lebron when he was at the three point line. He dove for it. I ran over, tried for the steal as he was laying on the ground with the ball, and tied it up for a jump ball.

- Raising hands can result in steals. Sometimes those hands get in the way of the pass, deflecting it for a loose ball opportunity. If timed correctly the hands up and down as the ball handler moves can poke the ball away from him while he dribbles.

- The throw ahead dribble is supposed to activate only in the back court. But sometimes the timing (press shift as the ball handler approaches mid court) causes it to activate in the front court. It's not always a bad thing, but just a note.

- A good deal of the high scoring comes off bad D (high scoring for the Heat) and lots of three pointers (for the Mavs.) Focused D can shut down the Heat in this demo. Hopefully the CPU plays tougher D in higher difficulty, sim settings. The shooting won't be as accurate with higher difficulty, more sim settings.

- Is there a difference in shooting between pulling down, then releasing at the proper time and pushing up, then releasing? I've always shot by pushing up, but the on screen tip says pull down, then release. There doesn't seem to be a difference.

pushing the RS in different directions gives you different shots if you are moving

Loving the demo. The whole game is impressively more fluid than 2k11. Especially the post game. I never used to play much in the post It felt slow and clunky, this year it's awesome. The spin move in ghe post now ends with an open dribble instead of gathering the ball and makes for some nice plays. Has any one figured out 2 step and euro step layuPs?

Been in the game before 2K12.

Same comment as above. You can even block shots using the steal button if timed right.

LT + RS towards the basket while running at the basket for a layup.

Posted my impressions here:
http://www.nba-live.com/?p=1347

In a nutshell, I’m liking what I’m seeing and am definitely looking forward to the full game, though like a lot of people I did feel a little disappointed that the demo is as stripped down as it is and would’ve liked more of an opportunity to sample what’s on offer this year.

Would've been nice to be able to change some settings and sliders, see a bit more of the game but there's still some good stuff in there. Hopefully the full version delivers the goods as expected.

Here is another video of highlights, and a bug with freethrows at the end.

phpBB [video]

Basically, Dirk was stuck in that animation and I couldn't do anything, so I had to quit. I hope that is not in the full version.

bad glitch. I think the game was frozen and not just the animation because the 10 second timer should have counted down to zero.
Sweet put-back by Wade!

I don't know why they made spin shots so difficult this year. They're not hard, per se, but spinning the shot stick is just weird.

Actually, it appears top be a bug. I talked to Jaosming, and he experienced the same bug.

A defensive 3 second violation, and a freeze on the technical freethrow.

iirc that free throw freeze up was a minor bug in the main game of either 2K9 or 2K10?

0:28 of Pdub's video is great.

Any word yet on what if anything from 2k11 with be compatible with 2k12?

none, that isn't info we'd get from 2K. We'll find that out on Tuesday when the game is out for PC.
