Analysis of "Player potential"

Sun Oct 30, 2011 5:27 pm

There's a really interesting thread going on right now over at operation sports: http://www.operationsports.com/forums/s ... p?t=518205

These 2 dudes are running tests and analyzing the way the potential rating affects player progression. Some really useful info. (Y)

Just a heads up.
Carry on.

It really is!

For people who can't be bothered reading through all 8 pages. Here's the basic things you need to know... (for those that like to go deep into association mode)..

- A rating of 74 for potential seems to be the magic number. Anything over that will see the player significantly develop. (i.e. 15-30 pts depending on their age.
- Any potential rating under 65 means that the player will not develop much (probably 2-6 pts depending on their age)
- The difference between 65 and 75 is huge. A player having a 73 or a 69 can be the difference between developing into an all-star or developing into a 6th man.

Synchromesh wrote:So for a 19 year old player with a base rating of 60/61 this is the rough potential scale (edit: Ignore scale for now) I have:

Potential 25-65: Progress 4-6 pts (role player)
Potential 67-71: Progress 12-16 pts (sixth man, average starter)
Potential: 73-99: Progress 21-28 pts (star, fringe superstar)

Among the "randomness" that was programmed into the game the fluctuation in progress will depend a bit on player height and minutes played.

I need to note however that I can't say "use this scale" at this point in time.

Interesting, pretty much close to my own observations since 2K went with the 25-100 range in its ratings, though not as detailed? as what that guy is doing and my observations were only as I went along through the seasons in association.

My 'magic number' is 75 plus or minus 3 and my minimum potential were about 63-65 as well.

That Barnsey guy over on OS is a dick. Doesn't even post in the right section sometimes.

And why have we not seen a thread called Shadow's "Magic Number" then? :cheeky:

I'm saving it for Lean or Jackal so I can wear all white for that special day without feeling of guilt. If not then benji is my last desperate hope for emotional fulfillment.

http://forums.nba-live.com/viewtopic.php?p=1394813#p1394813 ...did a bit of searching and that's probably only post I detailed about potential. Like I said it's only based on my association observations and not as detailed or systematic as that guy on OS is doing so I didn't feel the need to make a whole thread about it. My method is about as systematic and orderly as the Patch Releases section.
