question about creating alpha channels

Hello everyone,

I've been trying to learn how to make cyberfaces and there is only one thing that I can't figure out. So my question is ...how do you create an alpha channel that looks like a black and white version of the cyberface you are creating instead of just a section that is pure black and pure white (thats what ive been doing).
