Momentum

Sat Jan 28, 2012 2:51 am

I love this year's game. I already complained about the post game and I got over it and I now play it with mastery. But there's one more thing I hate about this game. The momentum swing. On last year, whenever I turn off the clutch factor, the momentum doesn't really affect gameplay. But this year, it really bugs me out.

For example, I am leading by 10. Then on the next 2 minutes, the CPU will be shooting around 100%. Then my players cannot shoot. Even on a clear path, my players will catch a collision with an opposing player so my shot won't go in. That happens even if I turn off Clutch Factor. Whereas last year, I can lead by 50 to 60 just by shooting open shots. But this year, it's never going to happen because of that momentum.

What do you do to override the momentum because simply turning Clutch Factor off doesn't work. Even turning the Clutch sliders doesn't make a difference.

When that happens, I usually reverse Da Czar's creed and play video games rather than basketball. That is to say, find a way to pound the ball inside and only take high percentage shots or draw the shooting foul, all the while avoiding trying anything fancy.

Sometimes using a timeout to break the momentum helps as well ... it won't help every time, but when it does it gets rid of those ridiculous 12-0 runs the CPU sometimes has.

That's playing basketball.

There's a difference between playing for fun and playing to win. If it's person vs person playing to win, play the video game. I used to hammer people during the Madden Challenge for playing football instead of Madden.

No matter how realistic a video game is to the sport, it's still a video game. It has quirks that the real sport doesn't have. For example, in most cases everyone playing NBA 2K12 has Magic Johnson's vision. You see the whole court the way only an elite few NBA players see the court (or saw it when they played).

For example, in 2K12 you can steal the ball by bumping a ball handler from the front. If it's player vs player to win, bump bump bump.

It certainly is still playing basketball. I guess I should clarify, I'm also talking about cheesing a little, exploiting certain moves when possible to counteract the AI being a little...over-assertive.

I played a game this morning. I was up 15 before the fourth then they had a 20-5 scoring run. So it went to OT. I don't know what went wrong but I missed two open dunks. The 2K AI really is alike Live's. Very bad.
