How do rookie contracts work?

I played my first two seasons with the 76'ers after getting drafted (PF, 30ppg, etc etc). we won the NBA championships in my first year (with a team including Holiday, Rudy Gay, Andrew Bogut, Ibaka, etc) and lost in the first round playoffs in my 2nd year. I was hoping to then become a freeagent to see what my market value was really worth, when I got the notification that the 76'ers have exercised an option to extend my contract for another year. wtf??? don't I have a choice? How did LeBron leave the Cavaliers?

LeBron left after his 7th season with the Cavs, and yes you don't have a choice cause it's a Team option not a player option and the contract isn't expired yet, because even after that season if your a high enough draft pick they have another option. You are still on your rookie contract, LeBron extended his contract after the rookie period.

ahh I see okay, makes sense I guess. I tried a trade to the Heat but they traded LeBron and Wade for me!! wtf?? ah well, I'll just wait for my free agency.

Rookie contracts have team options for the third and fourth years; the Sixers basically exercised their right to sign you to the full four years that rookie contracts can run for. It's what most teams do in real life when they don't want to lose a promising young player and ensure restricted free agent status at the end of the rookie contract, so you should be flattered.
