Chapter 19
Tyson sat at his locker, shirtless and both feet in a tub full of ice. A handtowel covered his face as his head rested on the closed locker door. The atmosphere in the room was sombre. Trevor Ariza and Chris Wilcox were going around and giving their teammates hugs and well wishes. Jao Wu and Aaron Karl were trying to console their older teammates. Andrew Bogut was dead silent as he changed into some clothes because he wanted to leave as soon as possible. Sit had just left to do his podium interview while Durant and Kidd were getting changed to conduct their interview together after Sit was finished. Seattle had requested that no media enter their change room and wait to talk to players as they left one by one; if the players even wanted to talk. When Bogut left, he snubbed reporters and continued walking.
Ty walked out of the locker room close to an hour after the game, “No comment.”
The reporters surrounded him and blocked his path.
“Ty, was this your last game for Seattle?”
“Is it true that you want to go home to New York?”
“The Bulls are interested in you. Do you think you could be the next Michael Jordan in Chicago?”
“Are you considering stay here?”
Ty kept saying, “No comment, no comment.”
He was waving for help and someone down the hall went to call for security.
“Even though we lost the game and the series,” Sit was saying, “I am proud of my guys and what they did. We did not give up until the end and that’s what you want to see in a ball club.”
“What about Allen Iverson?”
“As I said, I trusted Allen to come in and start and give us a lift. I think he was the best for the job of replacing Jason. We didn’t lose the series because of Allen. We lose as a team, we don’t single each other out. Basketball is a team game. Allen played well in the last three games, he did his job. Sacramento just played better than us. There’s nothing else I can say,” Sit defended his veteran guard.
“As a former manager of this team, what kind of roster do you think you will inherit. What kind of moves would you do to solidify your roster?”
This would be Sit’s last answer for the interview, “I think the team needs to work hard to get Reshawn Tyson’s signature. The team needs to spend money on that kid. He is very very good. I drafted him in 2009 and he has just developed into a phenomenal talent. We knew he was a great scorer but with the right guidance, his defence will be at a pro level too. Right now he’s like a young Tracy McGrady but we want him to be more of a two-way player than T-Mac ever was.”
Sit continued, “I know that I will probably be losing a couple of guys to free agency. I don’t know what kind of moves this team could make. It’s up to the front office for that.”
The Stealth PR man got up on the stage and thanked Sit for a fantastic season. It was time for Durant and Kidd to be interviewed. Moses Chara was impatiently waiting for his turn after them.
“Thank you Coach Sit for this year!” the PR man stated as everyone gave him a standing ovation as he left the room.
Durant and Kidd took their seats.
“This one is for Jason. How do you feel about the future?”
“I’m content,” Kidd was short and sweet but not really answering the question.
“What’s it like to watch Kevin score all these points and all you needed was another one or two to bounce your way?”
“I obviously wanted the guys to win. I wanted it really badly. Sometimes things don’t go your way,” Kidd pointed to his right arm as he finished.
“Kevin, are you going to try and keep Jason around?”
Durant laughed, “Of course. Jason is a big part of our team. I will be trying my hardest to keep him playing.”
Durant paused then stated, “But I do wish him the best of luck. It was a tremendous honour to play with a point guard of his calibre.”
Durant put his arm around Kidd and rubbed him on the head with the other, “Damn, this is why we lost. I forgot to rub his head for good luck!”
“It feels great to be back in the NBA Finals,” Moses Chara proclaimed.
“Do you have any thoughts you would like to share about the Seattle Stealth?” a voice from the back of the room called out.
Chara didn’t really have anything to say or he just didn’t want to talk about the Stealth at all. Of course, he was obliged to say something.
“As I’ve said all along, Andrew Bogut is their best player. He didn’t perform up to scratch because no one passes him the ball. I wouldn’t mind if he came to play for me. I’d make him an All-Star.”
“But he’s already an All-Star,” the same voice stated.
Chara was thrown off, “I’d make him a bigger star then. My point is that Bogut didn’t play well and that’s why they lost.”
Chara felt a sense of accomplishment as his gaze wandered around the room. All eyes and ears were on him. The League MVP had just helped his team to roll over the best team in the league and the best scorer in the league. He knew that he was the best player in the league now. He couldn’t wait to match up against Lebron James.
“Lebron needs to watch out for me,” Chara said, “I’m coming to beat him.”
Three weeks later, Chara and the Kings were NBA Champions. Coach Sit did not know whether he felt better or worse that his side had lost to the eventual champions.

There was a lot of uncertainty heading into the offseason. Sit had just sat through all of his players’ exit interviews to discuss the season. He firstly spoke with all the players who were definitely around next season like Andrew Bogut and David Lee.
“It was a good season from you Andrew,” Sit said, “I want to see you come back strong next year. We need you playing at a very high level for us to stay competitive.”
Sit also pledged his faith in Lee, “David, I’m going to talk to head office. I’m going to tell them not to trade you. Let’s get them to get behind you so that you don’t have to play with any uncertainty.”
Sit also met with first overall pick Jao Wu, “What did you get out of this season?”
Wu shrugged, “I guess I’m not ready for the NBA yet?”
“I know that you want playing time,” Sit said to him, “But you’re a smart guy. You know that there are a lot of good guys ahead of you on this team. Your time will come. Work hard this offseason and come back in camp to compete for a starting spot.”
Wu knew that Kidd might not be around next season and was ready for the challenge, “I’m sorry Coach for being stubborn. I’ve rescinded my trade request.”
Sit laughed, “No one was going to trading you away.”
Sit also praised Aaron Karl for his solid play throughout the season and then shared his sympathy that he got injured just prior to the playoff campaign, “I heard that the guys upstairs have been impressed with you this season. They’re wanting to keep you around. It’s a shame you got hurt, I could have used you in the playoffs.”
Karl had his eyes on Kidd’s spot, “What do I need to do to be the starting point guard?”
Sit advised him, “Come back fit. Come back healthy. And come back with some hunger.”
Karl didn’t understand what Sit was trying to get at. Sit didn’t either.
Trevor Ariza and Chris Wilcox both confirmed their wishes to test free agency to which Sit said to both, “I wish you guys a lot of luck. I really hope that you would reconsider but if Seattle is not for you then I guess you guys got to do what you think is best for you.”
Sit understood that Wilcox had been glued to the bench ever since David Lee had joined Seattle. It was his last chance to get a sizable contract before he got too old. Ariza had built a name for himself and wanted a bigger role; one he’d never have playing behind Durant and Ty. The rest of the team filed in and out of his office until there were only three guys left to meet with.
Kidd was up first.
“Water?” Sit offered him a glass.
Kidd declined, his arm was still in the sling.
“When’s it coming off?” Sit nodded at his right arm.
“Hopefully soon,” Kidd replied.
Sit began, “It was a great season Jason.”
“It was,” Kidd agreed.
“I think you can still play on.”
Kidd didn’t say anything.
Sit reiterated, “I think you should play on.”
Kidd laughed.
“Hey, you’re welcome on my coaching staff any day of the week man,” Sit offered him,
Kidd was frank with Sit, “Thank you for bringing me here to Seattle. I couldn’t have thought of any better way to end my NBA career.”
Sit stood up and shook Kidd’s hand, “It’s my pleasure. I always thought you could help us more than Nash. I’m sorry it didn’t work out.”
Kidd stated, “We were close. We were close in the end.”
Ty was second last.
“What are your plans for the offseason?” Sit asked him.
“I don’t know.”
“Come on,” Sit smiled, “Give me the inside word.”
“I’m thinking of asking the team to let me go,” Ty was honest, “I think a different team might be good for me.”
“Ok,” Sit said, “Just choose what is right for you. I know that you’ve been a lot in the past year.”
“Thanks Coach,” Ty stated.
“Hey, it’s no problem,” Sit replied, “You know I want the best for you. We’re losing a lot if you leave. Just don’t forget what you could have here in Seattle.”
Ty nodded.
Durant took a seat. Sit was pouring himself another drink.
“Want one?”
“No thanks Coach.”
Sit sat in his own seat, “Good because I wasn’t going to give you nothing after you fucked around.”
“Sorry coach,” Durant was acting ‘all sorry and shit’.
“Where do you see this team going?”
“All the way.”
“That sounds a bit unrealistic.”
“Why?” Durant asked.
Sit was blunt, “You don’t pass to your team mates.”
“So?”
“This might be your team but you need to share the rock man.”
“Hey, I’m the four time scoring champion.”
“I don’t care who you are. On my team, you got to involve everyone. Without Jason, you need to really lead this team by passing, playing defence and then scoring.”
“This is bullshit,” Durant got up.
“Walk away man,” Sit taunted him, “Walk away like the real woman you are!”
Durant walked to the door and before opening it to leave, he turned and pointed at Sit.
“You don’t know who you’re messing with. This is my team!”
* * *
Sit called him the faceless GM. This faceless GM would be going into the boardroom with Kevin Durant for a meeting the Seattle Stealth board. The meeting had been called the day before. He didn’t know what it was for. He met Durant outside the boardroom.
“Hey.”
Durant shook his hand, “Hey. Ready to go inside?”
“Sure.”
The board was seated at the back of the room. The long table was laden with food. Durant knew why these guys were so big.
“Want anything?” one of the board members asked their franchise player.
Durant was polite, “No thanks, I’ve eaten already.”
Durant sat down and so did Isaiah Thomas.
“Isaiah, it’s nice to see you again,” the most senior board member stated.
“How are you keeping up sir?” Isaiah asked him.
“I’m good, good.”
Durant decided to begin proceedings, “The reason I called this meeting is because I’m not happy with Coach Sit.”
One of the board members interrupted, “I agree. I think we need to keep Allen Iverson but what’s the point if Sit isn’t going to play him.”
Thomas was beaming; perhaps he could be GM-Coach, “I was thinking about firing him a long time ago.”
Durant continued, “I think that we need a new coach. I knew that he won Coach of the Year but he’s really holding me back.”
Another board member congratulated Durant, “You plated a heck of a Game 7 Kevin. Congratulations. I think if Sit wasn’t around, you’d have that kind of game all the time.”
Durant nodded at him as the head honcho of the board stood up and raised both hands to signal for silence, “Kevin, we have actually thought about this. The board as a whole does want to see Allen Iverson back on the team. We do think that there is a more suitable Coach for the team.”
Thomas was flashing his widest grin.
The senior board member looked at Thomas, “I’m sorry Isaiah. We have to let you go.”
“What?!” Thomas was now shocked and up on his feet, “You can’t do that!”
“Coach Sit was Coach of the Year, we can’t really just fire him. It’s in our best interests to keep him in town. So we’re going to offer him the position of General Manager. I guess that makes you redundant.”
“You can do that!”
The secretary called security and two security staff came in to escort Thomas out of the room.
“Thank you for your time here!” the senior board member called out.
He then turned his attention to Durant, “We’re very busy right now because of the sale of the team but we will make this our parting gift to you Kevin. We will sort out Coach Sit and move him back into the front office.”
“But that’s now what I want! I want Sit out of here altogether!” Durant was trying to stay calm.
“I’m sorry, we can’t really do that. Sit has to stay.”
Durant rebutted, “Well, I choose the coach.”
Another member laughed, “We’re one step ahead of you.”
Durant was confused, “What?”
“Say hello to your head coach.”
Durant turned around to see who it was.
