I know generics (Barney Steele, Donnell Lawrence & many more), just not who wins it all

Top 10 Point Guards
By Willard Smith
Following on from my successful ranking of teams, I will try my hand at ranking each NBA position 10 through to 1. Don’t crucify me if you don’t see your favorite player here. I’m sure you will all have your own arguments and justifications for including snubbed players!
The league is filled with quality point guards so this has probably been the toughest article to write. The difference between player number 10 and player number 1 is miniscule and I’d have to do a top 20 list to really do the league’s great 1 guards justice!
On the Bubble
Devin Harris, Charlotte Bobcats, 30, Years Pro: 10
2012-13 stats: 19.1 PPG, 7.1 APG, 1.5 SPG, 82 GP, 82 GS
Career stats: 14.4 PPG, 5.6 APG, 1.3 SPG, 686 GP, 555 GS
TJ Ford, Memphis Grizzlies, 30, Years Pro: 11
2012-13 stats: 17.9 PPG, 5.9 APG, 1.8 SPG, 73 GP, 73 GS
Career stats: 15.8 PPG, 6.9 APG, 1.4 SPG, 654 GP, 623 GS
Jerryd Bayless, Dallas Mavericks, 25, Years Pro: 6
2012-13 stats: 15.2 PPG, 3.7 RPG, 3.3 APG, 1.1 SPG, 28.2 MPG, 82 GP, 0 GS
Career stats: 12.5 PPG, 2.4 RPG, 2.9 APG, 1.0 SPG, 410 GP, 97 GS
Jameer Nelson, Orlando Magic, 31, Years Pro: 10
2012-13 stats: 14.2 PPG, 3.8 RPG, 6.9 APG, 1.1 SPG, 82 GP, 82 GS
Career stats: 13.7 PPG, 3.4 RPG, 6.0 APG, 1.1 SPG, 697 GP, 603 GS

Top Ten
10. Rajon Rondo, Boston Celtics, 27, Years Pro: 8
2012-13 stats: 12.0 PPG, 6.8 RPG, 9.3 APG, 2.5 SPG, 82 GP, 82 GS
Career stats: 10.2 PPG, 5.2 RPG, 6.6 APG, 1.9 SPG, 565 GP, 512 GS
Rajon Rondo can’t shoot. But he can do everything else. If the Boston Celtic ever figures out how to consistently knock down a jumper, he’d probably be a top 5 point guard in this league. I’m unsure how confident Boston is in their young floor general after they signed one the league’s leading assists men and drafted a promising point guard prospect; creating a logjam at the position. Could this be the end of Rondo’s stay in Boston?

9. Louis Nixon, Golden State Warriors, 24, Years Pro: 4
2012-13 stats: 16.2 PPG, 7.4 APG, 1.1 SPG, .490 FG%, .421 3PT%, .852 FT%, 82 GP, 56 GS
Career stats: 13.9 PPG, 6.5 APG, 1.0 SPG, .497 FG%, .421 3PT%, .857 FT%, 246 GP, 65 GS
Louis Nixon got his wish to start for the Warriors and it worked out for the team as they finished as one of the best teams in the very tough Western Conference. He and Monta Ellis form one of the most exciting starting backcourt tandems in the league. Nixon has always given something for Warriors fans to cheer about after being selected in the 2010 NBA Draft; where he was pretty much the steal of the night. There are doubts though that he will stay in Golden State after this final year of his rookie deal.

8. Barney Steele, New Jersey Nets, 24, Years Pro: 5
2012-13 stats: 11.5 PPG, 6.3 RPG, 8.6 APG, 0.8 SPG, 0.8 BPG, 82 GP, 82 GS
Career stats: 11.2 PPG, 5.8 RPG, 8.2 APG, 0.8 SPG, 0.7 BPG, 328 GP, 328 GS
The New Jersey Nets got to the NBA Finals twice in 2002 and 2003. Jason Kidd was their leader and everyone in New Jersey has always called Steele the second coming of Kidd. Steele has the skill set that Kidd has but he is also making a run at another NBA legend. Don’t be surprised if he is compared to the great John Stockton in the near future. Steele has not missed a game in his whole career so far.

7. Russell Westbrook, Sacramento Kings, 24, Years Pro: 6
2012-13 stats: 13.6 PPG, 3.8 RPG, 6.0 APG, 1.6 SPG, .500 FG%, 82 GP, 82 GS
Career stats: 11.6 PPG, 2.9 RPG, 4.1 APG, 1.2 SPG, 410 GP, 246 GS
Westbrook has come a long way after starting off in Seattle before being banished to Charlotte. He rotted on the bench with the Bobcats before Sacramento saw something in him. That ‘something’ has eventuated in a championship ring as the starting point guard in Sacramento. The former UCLA Bruin has learnt how to use his athletic abilities to be a sound point guard. His biggest contribution comes on the defensive end. Nothing pumps up the Kings more than a Westbrook intercept and fast break dunk.

6. Baron Davis, Phoenix Suns, 34, Years Pro: 15
2012-13 stats: 20.6 PPG, 1.5 RPG, 4.8 APG, 1.8 SPG, 82 GP, 82 GS
Career stats: 19.1 PPG, 3.4 RPG, 6.7 APG, 1.9 SPG, 1018 GP, 911 GS
Baron Davis has always been a quality player but his attitude has always hindered his teams from winning. One day, Davis might look back and think about what could have been. At age 34 and still averaging 20 points a night, it might not be too late for Davis to dig in deep and stay focused for 82 games. With Marrti Must in town, Davis might have a last shot to compete in the NBA postseason!

5. Jason Kidd, Seattle Stealth, 40, Years Pro: 20
2012-13 stats: 10.9 PPG, 4.6 RPG, 7.9 APG, 1.5 SPG, .487 FG%, .472 3PT%, 82 GP, 82 GS
Career stats: 13.7 PPG, 6.4 RPG, 9.4 APG, 1.9 SPG, .410 FG%, .354 3PT%, 1423 GP, 1409 GS
Jason Kidd has adapted his game so that he can still play at a high level. The Stealth have done a wonderful job with the veteran to help with his shooting and it was evidenced last season by his career high shooting percentages from the field and behind the three point line. Kidd may have lost a couple of steps but he can still hold his own against the NBA’s best guards on the defensive end. The Stealth were rolling towards an NBA Finals and possible championship before Kidd fell to injury. The Stealth crashed out of the playoffs with lack of direction from the most important position on the floor. That proves how good this 40 year old still is.

4. Tony Parker, San Antonio Spurs, 31, Years Pro: 13
2012-13 stats: 20.6 PPG, 3.9 RPG, 7.0 APG, 82 GP, 82 GS
Career stats: 18.1 PPG, 3.4 RPG, 6.2 APG, 950 GP, 944 GS
Tony Parker has vowed that he is ready for his best season yet in his career. Parker stated that he has taken inspiration from the recently retired Steve Nash and that he is confident he can have a couple of MVP worthy years to add onto his already glittering career with the Spurs. As Tim Duncan’s career looks to come to a close soon, Parker is looking forward to the unknown that is ahead.

3. Ray Lliach, LA Clippers, 24, Years Pro: 4
2012-13 stats: 18.7 PPG, 10.7 APG, 6.1 RPG, 2.8 SPG, 82 GP, 82 GS
Career stats: 16.6 PPG, 9.1 APG, 4.9 RPG, 2.4 SPG, 240 GP, 240 GS
Want to know a fun fact? Both Ray Lliach and Martti Must are Estonian – these guys have taken the league by storm! Ray Lliach is one of the most popular young point guards in the NBA and the reason for the Clippers’ sudden revival is all Lliach. Lliach has done so well that he does deserve a better leading big man than Amare Stoudemire. Donald Sterling, take note of this blog please!

2. Deron Williams, Utah Jazz, 29, Years Pro: 9
2012-13 stats: 22.5 PPG, 4.0 RPG, 8.3 APG, 1.9 SPG, 82 GP, 82 GS
Career stats: 19.5 PPG, 3.3 RPG, 8.2 APG, 1.4 SPG, 625 GP, 592 GS
I had trouble choosing between Deron and the guy at number 1. Deron is one of my favourite players in the league and I think I will be bold enough to say that he is a better All-Around player on both ends of the floor than the guy that tops this list. Why does Deron not top this list even if I think he is the better player?
-----
1. Chris Paul, New Orleans Hornets, 28, Years Pro: 9
2012-13 stats: 23.0 PPG, 4.3 RPG, 8.9 APG, 2.1 SPG, 82 GP, 82 GS
Career stats: 21.3 PPG, 4.3 RPG, 9.7 APG, 2.4 SPG, 632 GP, 632 GS
Because Chris Paul has all the intangibles. He is a true leader who has turned an average squad into NBA champions. The Hornets are always one of the top 3 teams in the Western Conference. Deron Williams may be better all-around on both ends of the floor but Chris Paul has the creativity and superior leadership that everyone wants on their team. Paul’s assists may have dropped and that is mainly due to his team getting worse over the past two seasons but isn’t it amazing to see the Hornets still competition so strong?
