Monthly Recap: December
Part Three: Around The League

Monthly Recaps are divided into several parts in order to give readers a quick and organized overview. Part Three of the Monthly Recap is the ‘Around the League’ recap, which features transactions and other League news. Part Four will feature the All- :new: NLSC Rookie Focus!

Transactions

The Pacers made a surprise deal for Luis Scola in exchange for Marquis Daniels. One would think that would keep them on top of the Eastern Conference but it didn’t. Indiana spent some time at the top before embarking on a huge losing streak. However, Scola has started to fit into the team and they are back to their winning ways for now. Indiana may have made the best deal of the season if they find themselves going far in this season’s postseason!

December Trades:

5 Dec – Spurs F K Thomas traded for Wizards C D Songalia
5 Dec – Rockets F L Scola traded for Pacers F M Daniels

Monthly Recap: December
Part Four: NLSC Rookie Focus

Monthly Recaps are divided into several parts in order to give readers a quick and organized overview. Part Four of the Monthly Recap is the NLSC Rookie Focus where one NLSC rookie is chosen to be presented to you, the reader, in order for you to get to know them better. Part Five will feature the All- :new: Team Focus.

Player Focus: Martti Must

Image
Martti Must, always a team player, gives a thumbs up to Rudy Gay

#24 | PF | Memphis Grizzlies (11-20) |
6’8” | 247 lbs | Age: 22 | North Carolina |
2009 Draft | Round: 1 |Pick: 5 |

Position Rank: 32nd
Overall Rank: 186th
Role: Starter – Replaceable if upgrade comes along
Agent: "It’s amazing to see my client this happy. Whatever you’re doing, please keep it up!"
09-10 Statistics: 10.7 ppg, 7.0 rpg, 3.7 apg, 0.9 bpg, 31 GP, 31 GS

“Playing for Memphis is eye opening…”

All of his life, Must has been a winner. He won games by himself for his national team, Estonia, in European ‘B Division’ Championships; for his high school teams in Estonia; and won national titles with the Tar Heels in his sophomore year. Must thought he was destined to win on any team he played for, whether he was the star or a role player.

However, his attitude changed when he was drafted by Memphis. After a 20 point drubbing in the Grizzlies’ season opener, Must knew he was in for a long season. “I’ve never really been on a losing team before,” he says, “This will take some adjusting to.”

The big man was always criticized for his lack of athletic ability but his technical ability has more than made for that. Although he has struggled to score on some nights, he always hustles and makes himself a factor everywhere else on the score sheet. Must expected to be a star in College but never got a chance as he played with Reshawn Tyson who destined to be the Tar Heels’ number one option. That experience served him well as he made the transition to the NBA, where he is playing for Rudy Gay and OJ Mayo’s team.

“My experience with UNC helped me realize that I don’t need to score all the points to help my team win,” Must states, “I’ve played with some pretty good players in my life and I know that Rudy, OJ, and even Michael (Conley Jr) can carry this team on their shoulders. My job is to support them.” Marrti hasn’t done a bad job individually though as he has beaten All-Star talents Shawn Marion and Lamar Odom to a spot in the team’s starting five. His work ethic and positive attitude has many buzzing about his potential to be a key contributor on a title-contender in the future.

NLSC Rookie Statistics

Byron Brock 8.8 ppg, 5.6 rpg, 0.3 apg
Mark Moore 12.3 ppg, 1.2 rpg, 4.3 apg
Martti Must 10.7 ppg, 7.0 rpg, 3.7 apg
Klemen Pirc 6.0 ppg, 2.4 rpg, 3.1 apg
Zoilo Resurreccion 11.2 ppg, 0.7 rpg, 8.4 apg
Andrew Watson 18.6 ppg, 4.9 rpg, 3.9 apg

you are doing great right now, getting the 8th seed so far, the Durant - Kidd combo is working well for you it seems, those two are leading the league in points and assists..keep it up!

Thanks man, we just need David Lee to come back and lead the team in rebounding. He started the season poorly...

Well, we did trade for Bassy man. :P And the team isn't doing too bad right now.

You had 23 points from off the bench in one game (career high)... your scoring is pretty much up and down. Some game you might score 8 or 10 points, in others you will only have 2 or 4... but thats wat u get when you play with Agent Zero...

Homicide wrote:Hmmm... My scoring average slightly went up, I wonder if I would be able to crack the Top 5 in assists by season's end...

And the Sixers are in the hunt for a playoff spot, something not many of the NLSCers can boast about!

TEAM REPORT

Many things happen for a reason. And many things don’t happen for a reason. If you asked the Indiana Pacers Front Office a year ago, they were trying desperately to offload Jamaal Tinsley. Tinsley didn’t want to be with the Pacers anymore and the team didn’t want him. A trade for TJ Ford pushed Tinsley onto the bench and the team didn’t need him anymore.

A trade never eventuated despite all of the rumors. What Indiana didn’t lose became their gain as Tinsley has been a prime reason the Indiana’s revival this season. “Not leaving the team is a blessing,” Tinsley reflects, “We have a great group of guys here and we have started to gel. We don’t let our egos get into the way.”

With Tinsley, Mike Dunleavy Jr, and Troy Murphy coming off of the bench for the Pacers; the team has stayed at the top of the Eastern Conference for the first two months of the season. A trade at the start of the month brought Argentine Luis Scola to the team. At first, his addition hurt more than it helped the team as Indiana’s eight game winning streaked promptly ended and was followed by five straight losses.

“That was only a slight bump in the road,” star player Danny Granger said, “But it was a tough stretch.” During the five game losing streak, two consecutive losses came at the buzzer and each by a margin of three points. “We’re a young team and it took a while to adjust. Troy went to the bench so that Luis could start and it just changed the whole dynamic of the team.”

The Pacers did get it right eventually and have been back on their winning way; currently on a three game winning streak. The success of the team has been based on three things; the success of the their point guards Ford and Tinsley, a solid starting five backed up by a deep bench, and Danny Granger.

“Danny has stepped up this year,” Pacers Coach Jim O’Brien says of his star forward, “He has become one of the best scorers in the league.” Granger is averaging 25.3 ppg as well as 5.4 rpg, 1.5 spg, and 1.7 bpg. His shooting has been very efficient too as he is scoring at clips of .516 from the field and .473 from behind the arc. O’Brien adds, “In the playoffs, this team will go as far Danny will take us.”

Seattle Stealth Acquire Former High School Prodigy

January 11, 2010

NEW YORK (AP) – The Minnesota Timberwolves and Seattle Stealth have been involved in a deal; the main pieces of the deal being the team’s back up point guards. Sebastian Telfair has been dealt to Seattle with Brian Cardinal in exchange for veteran Earl Watson, French big man Johan Petro and the Stealth’s first round pick for the upcoming Draft.

The Stealth, who have a 20-18 record entering tomorrow night’s game against the New York Knicks, were expected to be shipping disgruntled Adam Morrison in exchange for Telfair. However, a change in plan occurred and the team decided that Watson was expendable if the team is to attempt to develop the 24 year old Telfair.

“We believe Sebastian still has potential to develop into a steady playmaker and someone our team can rely on when Jason Kidd is ready to hang the jersey up,” Stealth General Manager Will Sit said at a press conference, “I’m not going to lie. I really do think Sebastian is the point guard of our team’s future.”

Telfair, who had his best game this season with a 10 assist effort in a 130-105 win against the Phoenix Suns just a fortnight ago, was the 13th overall pick of the 2004 NBA Draft. After playing two seasons for the Portland Trailblazers, the 6’0” PG has spent time in Boston before landing in Minnesota as a part of the Celtics’ deal to acquire Kevin Garnett.

Telfair reportedly impressed the Stealth with his assist to turnover ratio of 3.04. He is currently averaging 4.7 ppg and 3.8 apg, all in limited minutes. He barely records a turnover per game (0.8). Telfair’s weak shooting has been an issue as he is only a career .397 shooter from the field. The Stealth have vowed to work with him on his shot though and hope that they can give the Brooklyn native another weapon at his disposal.

The Timberwolves, who are 19-17, needed an experienced player and receive the well-respected Earl Watson. Watson is averaging 8.3 ppg and 4.7 apg on .477 shooting from the field. He was an important member of the Stealth for the past season and a half, providing an instant offensive spark whenever stepping onto the court from the bench. He was satisfied to finish his career in Seattle but welcomes the new challenge he faces in Minnesota, “Hopefully I will help the Wolves make the playoffs.”

The seldom-used Brian Cardinal is expected to be waived by the Stealth and Telfair is expected to make his debut in tomorrow night’s game at Madison Square Garden.

Kevin Durant dunks over New York’s Byron Brock

12 January, 2010

NEW YORK (AP) – David Lee survived a hostile return to Madison Square Garden, scoring 27 points in a win against the team he played four seasons for. The Knicks held a double digit lead for a long stretch in the third quarter but affairs soon got testy between Lee and his old teammates.

Former teammate Zach Randolph shoved Lee into the stands. A small scuffle erupted near the baseline before officials broke the players up. Lee would then go on to record 13 of his 27 points in the third. “I used that (incident) as motivation. The fans were booing and it sort of broke my heart a bit,” Lee said after the game, “I played here for a few years and got a lot of love. I guess it was different to be on the other side.”

George Karl was proud of how his star forward handled the atmosphere, “He (Lee) didn’t shy away. The crowd weren’t going to let him have it, they really wanted to try and get in his head.” Team mate Kevin Durant also praised Lee, “It was great to see David play so well after being treated like that. The fans didn’t show him any respect.”

Lee’s scoring helped the Stealth close the gap to 2 points and headed into the fourth quarter trailing 66-64. New York came out of the break looking to seal the deal. The Knicks had their noses in front 72-64 with 8 minutes left in the game before Durant and Jeff Green stepped up. The pair led the Stealth on a 15-0 run; Durant’s dunk, with 2:33 remaining, over rookie Byron Brock capping the scoring run and leaving the stunned crowd silent.

The Knicks didn’t back off though and scored three straight baskets to cut the score line to a meager three points at 81-78. Lee then scored a bucket in the post with 1:09 left on the clock before stealing the ball at halfway and passed ahead to Durant who dunked the ball and put his team up 85-78 with 1:01 left.

Randolph hit a wide open jumper with 41.0 seconds left before Danilo Gallinari closed the gap to three points for the second time in the waning minutes of the match; the score 85-82 after the Italian’s dunk. However, it was too little too late as the Stealth ran the clock down and Jason Kidd calmly sunk the game-clinching 18-footer with 2.8 ticks left on the clock.

Notes: Sebastian Telfair, recently acquired from Minnesota, made his debut for Seattle. He finished the game with 5 points and 6 assists… Brian Cardinal , also acquired in the deal that netted Telfair, was waived this morning by Seattle… The Stealth have announced that Brad Miller will be out for another week due to his broken toe… Knicks SG Raja Bell was injured during a training session two days ago and thus was in street clothes for this game…

Its a shame to hear that you'll need to compact some of the recaps, but judging by the subsequent recaps, this is still going pretty strong. I really hope you continue to keep this going. This is already one of the greatest dynasty (association, whatever) stories ever made, and I'm really into it.

Don't like the trade much. Watson and Petro for Bassy and Cardinal is already an even trade, and with the first round pick you lose a potentially decent prospect and a fallback if the Sonics choke again.\

Keep it up. Can't wait for your next updates. (Y) (Y)

P.S. What ever happened to Payton?
