2012-13 Player Awards
By Aaron Jones

A Recap of who won what for the 2012-13 NBA Regular Season.

Most Valuable Player: SF Moses Chara (Sacramento Kings)
Key Statistics: 25.6 ppg, 9.0 rpg, 8.7 apg, 1.9 spg

Chara edged out Lebron James for this one. NBA scoring champion Kevin Durant (my dark horse to win it) was a distant third in voting. Moses Chara thoroughly deserves this award. James and Durant both are blessed with athleticism that goes a long way to helping them with their games. Chara just isn’t the most athletic guy in the gym and makes do with what he has. A sexy jumpshot, court smarts and a never-say-die attitude combine to give you this season’s NBA most valuable player.

Rookie of the Year: C Janis Kalnins (Minnesota Timberwolves)
Key Statistics: 8.0 ppg, 6.1 rpg, 3.0 apg

This is a huge surprising considering that:

A) Liam Washburn of the Bucks had much better averages.
B) The Bucks made the playoffs and the Wolves didn’t.

Talk about a confusing award winner here.

Defensive Player of the Year: C Dwight Howard (Orlando Magic)
Key Statistics: 17.5 ppg, 12 rpg, 1.1 spg, 3.0 bpg

This was pretty much expected but I was surprised by how much of a landslide Dwight won by. Kenneth Dela Cruz was my pick here and I think he’s going to show everyone why when he matches up against Moses Chara in the next round of the playoffs. Other players that had great defensive seasons were Donnell Lawrence, Michael Beasley and Josh Smith.

Sixth Man of the Year: PG Jerryd Bayless (Dallas Mavericks)
Key Statistics: 15.6 ppg, 3.7 rpg, 3.3 apg, 1.1 spg

With Steve Nash retiring, the point guard spot in Dallas is in good hands. Bayless has been on the cusp for many years and his time will finally come next season. It’s good to see him add some hardware for his efforts. Gerald Wallace and Rodney Stuckey were contenders in this field but Bayless must have made the cut due to the Mavs making the postseason.

Most Improved Player: C Brook Lopez (Detroit Pistons)
Key Statistics: (2011-12) 3.6 ppg, 2.2 rpg, 0.4 apg, 0.5 bpg to (2012-13) 8.6 ppg, 8.1 rpg, 1.4 apg, 1.2 bpg

There wasn’t a big field of names here. Lopez was solid but nothing spectacular as he more than double his production across the board.

Coach of the Year: Will Sit (Seattle Stealth)

He got his team to play even harder this season after a heartbreaking Western Conference Finals loss last season. He got Kevin Durant to harness his scoring talents and be even more efficient with the basketball. He got Reshawn Tyson and Andrew Bogut to the All-Star Game. He got David Lee, Allen Iverson, Aaron Karl, Trevor Ariza to fit in as role players. And the most genius move of all was the gutsy benching of 2012 first overall draft pick Jao Wu in favour of the veteran-savvy Jason Kidd. The final result: 59 wins, number 1 seed and a shot at an NBA title. Not bad for the second year Stealth coach.

All-NBA Teams:
First Team: Dwight Howard, Martti Must, Moses Chara, Dwyane Wade, Ray Lliach
Second Team: Andrew Bogut, Jay Gray, Lebron James, Gilbert Arenas, Chris Paul
Third Team: Yao Ming, Michael Beasley, Kevin Durant, Andre Iguodala, Deron Williams

All-Defensive Teams:
First Team: Dwight Howard, Martti Must, Kenneth Dela Cruz, Andre Iguodala, Ray Lliach
Second Team: Greg Oden, Michael Beasley, Josh Smith, Larry Williams, Rajon Rondo

All-Rookie Teams:
First Team: Janis Kalnins, Eric Smith, Liam Washburn, Albano Spagnoletti, Ifeanyi Ndiaye
Second Team: Jake Williamson, Frederich Lampley, Carl Thomas, Leo Lai, Marc Oliver

All-NBA 1st and All-Defense 1st team. I better get a big fat contract this summer and I hope my man Reshawn Tyson joins me. :)

Nice to see Chara finally get MVP. Well overdue.

Can't believe 2 NLSC-ers in All-NBA & Defensive 1st teams. Must is no surprise but Lliach is

Improve Your Player and All-NEW Player Influence

Improve Your Player

Every participant has a certain number of points that they will be able to use on improving attributes of their virtual player. You only have one chance to use all these points so don’t waste your points (i.e. any leftover points are not able to be brought forward to the next tipping competition).

For every Skill-based attribute, it costs you 4 points in order to improve that certain attribute by 1. For every Physical-based attribute, it costs you 8 points in order to improve that certain attribute.

Skill-based attributes are skills like shooting, dribbling, passing, rebounding, etc. Physical-based attributes includes attributes like strength, speed, endurance, as well as mental attributes such as awareness. If you are unsure whether the attribute you want to include is a skill-based or physical-based one, you are able to post and pose your question.

A quick example of how to let me know how you want to improve your player:

Player: 75 points
Three point shooting + 5 (20 points)
Mid range shooting + 4 (16 points)
Layup + 3 (12 points)
Stamina + 3 (24 points)
3 Points left over that cannot be spent

All-NEW Player Influence

Here is a brand new scheme that gives you more control over the fortunes of your virtual player.

Complain About Role On Team: 100 points
Demand Trade: 200 points
Demand Trade and Request Destination: 250 points

The points listed are minimum values. The more points you spend, the stronger your request will be. If you don’t like being a benchwarmer, you can complain about your role. The more points you use, the stronger your complaint will be. It may result in a teammate being traded away or you forcing your way into the starting five. For example, spend 150 points to complain about your role and you are more likely to succeed with your complaint than spending just 100 points.

If you don’t like your team, spend at least 200 points to demand a trade. To ensure your trade demand does not fall upon deaf ears, spend more points to get your point across.

There are no guarantees that your player’s wishes will be heard and the only way to get past this is to spend more points.

Points

You can accumulate points during any time of the season by participating in contests and also by posting articles that provide a different view of my story. These points may be cashed in: at the conclusion of the postseason, before the regular season begins and All-Star weekend.

Good luck!

Points As Of End Of First Round

Playoff predictions, awards predictions and other points have all been accounted for. As you will see below, all those who participated in the ‘random’ contests or posting articles have the most points. You can still post articles if you wish!

Martti. 85
Shadowgrin 30
The X 70
Lamrock 95
Valor 180
Puttincomputers 125
Durantula_MVP -30
Houndy 90

King Dee 70
Clutch 40
Newc 20
Megarover 35
Cartar 42
Mark. 5
Hova 85
George7 95
Z02 75

I remind you that grand prizes of +70, +50 and +30 points are up for grabs for the top 3 place getters in the playoff tipping comp. After Round 1, the top 6 are:

1. Dare 115
2. Valor 105
3. George7, puttincomputers, eirsej 95
4. Justine 90
5. Houndy, Chriso0 85
6.Martti, Clutch 80

Lliach definitely is a bit of a shock but he's been quietly carrying the Clippers... Ron Harper style. :)
