Official 2k11 Impressions Thread

Postby The X on Tue Oct 05, 2010 1:05 pm

I picked up NBA 2k11 for PS3 from EB about an hour ago. At work at the moment, but will play later tonight & give my impressions.

Please post your impressions of the game here so we don't have a hundred different threads.

Yep, I been told that the embargo was broken by EB *shaking head* but it's a good thing my mate at JB can get it for me tomorrow instead of Friday. On the topic of embargo, X's mate said that there was none to start with.

Stupid retailers.

Keen to see people's impressions. :)

EDIT: Didn't know we had so many Queenslanders on this forum. :)

Interested in seeing how it stacks up to the console version(S) myself. I already see that its using 2k10's menus...Which is pretty odd.

Just played opening game (Bulls vs Lakers). Actually lost a close one, just like real Bulls. Get this, Scottie feels like Scottie (Y) They've actually done a great job replicating the old school players. Worthy is a handful, Scottie is a menace all over the court, MJ is MJ, you've gotta keep Byron Scott in check, otherwise he'll kill you too. Shame they don't have full 12 man rosters for all classic teams. Hopefully can download something soon to sort that out.

Initial impressions after just one game:

- It feels like a lot better game than 2k10.
- I like it more than demo too.
- Game looks great on PS3 (360 might be slightly better, but for me, I think it looks great). Best of all, not one framerate issue or slowdown (this is offline play). I don't mind slight jaggies (only noticeable if you are looking for them & only on certain camera angles) if game runs at smooth 60 fps & it seems too (Y)
- Stars are stars, role players are role players, individuality of different players (through animations, looks & tendencies) is great.
- Seems like they've got a bit more real time physics in there than expected. More loose balls, more everything.
- Game looks & plays smooth.
- There are so many different controls to learn, just read instructions & you'll see. At least they've actually given us all the moves in instruction manual this year (Y)

Overall, very happy so far. Will post more impressions later. Best basketball game I've played since post-patch College Hoops 2k8.

I also heard rumours the player models are the same from 2k10, hopefully not true. hope someone can confirm

Does that mean some 2k10 patches will be compatible you think? Like courts, for example.

i doubt that. i remember back in 2k9. NOTHING was compatible. But, it wont take long to convert everything. Lazymac did alot of converting last year. some one will do it, while other people work on new stuff (Y)

Played Jordan Challenge, MJ against '86 Celtics. Got close but got beaten by Bird & DJ's clutch 4th quarter play. C's are one helluva team. McHale is just a beast in post. Bird does his little touch passes (Y) He also does as much off the ball with v-cuts & using screens to get open. I did manage to contain him though, but unfortunately I couldn't stop everybody. Dennis Johnson absolutely ripped apart Macy & Paxson. No surprises there :P

Anyways, fell short of 63 point game. Ended up with 50pts on 60% shooting, with 5 rebounds, 6 assists, 3 steals & a lot of vintage young MJ plays :P

A few points:

    - Quarter length for Jordan Challenge is only 8 minutes. I hope they patch it so that this is editable as was having to go to MJ every possession to even put up 50 points. Will have to play uptempo, 10 seconds or less bball with MJ getting almost every shot to do some of the scoring challenges.
    - Seems like the layups are still too high off the backboard. I'm got a feeling that PS3 version is a slightly older build than final NTSC 360 version. Reason I say this is that Mike Wang said on OS that high layups were gone before final release. Obviously he didn't know that not all versions were this case. Either way, it doesn't really affect the experience too much & isn't every layup. I'm sure once first patch is released this will be sorted.
    - Noticed a minor glitch in socks. Appears long white songs look half white/half black. Don't think that's intentional though
    - Played sim play style on pro difficulty. Just going to play this difficulty until I learn the new controls well enough, as well as break out of old habits & become a bit more careful with my passing.
    - Classic teams are editable, which is great.

All this being said, it's just a great feeling as a big NBA history buff to be able to re-enact these great games/moments. To play against the '86 Celtics, one of the greatest teams of all-time, can not be understated. It really did feel like MJ versus Celtics. Can't wait for somebody to release adjusted classic rosters with full bench (Bill Walton etc).

Yes and yes.

Signature shots & playing styles are uncanny at times. I was having to double team McHale everytime he got the ball in the post. Worthy had his signature one-handed dunk. MJ has his hands on his knees just like he always did IRL when somebody else is shooting free throws.

I haven't been able to play with all the teams, but from what I've seen of the '86 Bulls, '86 Celtics, '89 (or '88) Hawks, '91 Bulls, '91 Lakers & '96 Sonics, they all feel pretty good. With the '91 Bulls it's MJ & Pip with Ho Grant doing dirty work. BJ brings some energy off bench but rest are all role players. With '86 Celtics, they can beat you with each of their starters. Pick your poison, Bird, McHale, Parish, Ainge & DJ. I would've loved to have seen full 12 man squads, but at least they got the main guys from each team. As I said before, will be good when somebody finishes the rest of the classic team's benches with proper looks & tendencies.

Nice info X.

I totally agree that editing to 12 min quarters is pretty important for the Jordan Challenge, 60+ pts or averaging 30+-11 for a series and things like that are hard enough as it is I imagine, lol.

LittleMan, I'm talking the 63 points with MJ. IRL he did that in OT game so played around what, 50 minutes. You only get 32 minutes to do it. I did manage to put up 75 points for the team for the game, but that was putting up quick shots, not running too many plays. I want to take my time, score in the flow like MJ did, not force feed him everytime down the court.

Are you playing sim style or you just kept it on default?

I agree that I do need to tone down the turnovers. I have no doubt I can get 63 points & 6 points with MJ, but would like to do it in the flow, that's all.

All good though, I'll probably hold off doing the Jordan Challenges until benches of each team are updated with proper players, their looks, playing styles & tendencies. Just so I can fully enjoy the mode
