NBA Live series Executive Producer Sean O’Brien is fully aware that the "NBA 2K" series is a juggernaut and is focused on tipping the playing field after several years on the sidelines.
O'Brien, who previously served as senior producer for "NBA Live 10," before leaving to pursue other opportunities, has quickly put his stamp on the series. After being reassigned to the franchise, O'Brien brought in Gary Patterson, known for his work on the physics system in the FIFA games, as Senior Creative Director. Then with former pro baller turned gameplay designer Scott O'Gallagher, the two resigned the dribbling system in the game.
The new dribble engine, which O'Brien says is the first attempt to spice up ball-handling in the series in nearly a decade, will improve the game, but admits the franchise still has a lot of work to do.
"We still have a lot to prove. 2K has made a great game. There is no argument there," O'Brien said in an exclusive interview. "But, we wouldn’t be developing 'NBA Live 14' if we didn’t think we had something new to offer basketball fans. That said, our focus right now is to make a great basketball video game. We aren’t going to sacrifice our vision just to check feature boxes on the back of a package."
"NBA Live 14" is set for a release later this year on the Xbox One and PlayStation 4.
