EA Sports announced today that NBA Elite 11, the new basketball sim that spawned from the once-great NBA Live franchise, will come bundled with a one-time download code for a new, high-definition version of NBA Jam for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.
If you've seen any of our coverage of NBA Jam for Wii (winner of our Sports Game of the Show Award at E3), then this announcement should have you mighty excited to see what EA Sports can do with the added horsepower of HD consoles.
The bundle of NBA Elite 11 and a download code for NBA Jam will hit store shelves on October 5 for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 for $59.99.
Wii users concerned about their version being overshadowed should rest easy knowing that the Xbox 360 and PS3 downloads feature a scaled back set of game modes. For the $59.99 price tag of NBA Elite 11, players will be able to enjoy the Classic Campaign (a simple ladder-style tournament that pits you against the rest of the league) and an Exhibition Mode. The HD versions, however, will support online multiplayer over Xbox Live and PlayStation Network, a feature that has yet to be confirmed for Wii users.
As fate would have it, I recently took a trip up to Vancouver to get my hands on an early build of NBA Jam and we'll have the first hands-on and direct-feed footage this Friday on IGN. For now, feast your eyes on our pair of screenshots and be sure to note the fantastic facial expressions.

So now you have to buy a game to get a game that would sell millions on its own.

Guess that's their big announcement. Trust IGN to let the cat out of the bag in the name of a scoop, knowing they're too big to cut off.

It remains to be seen whether this will increase sales for NBA Elite 11 but I'm certainly happy to get two games for the price of one and a Jam release on the Xbox 360. Shame it won't have all the game modes as the Remix Tour does sound interesting but the classic tournament mode will be good for nostalgia.

It is probably just a timed release of the news as these stories were probably written yesterday and placed in the queue:
http://espn.go.com/espn/thelife/videoga ... =fullstoryI've seen three sentimentalities:
1. People going to buy Elite, use the code, and immediately return the game.
2. People going to wait for Elite to drop to $10-15 and buy it on clearance.
3. People pissed that it's "free" when the Wii version is $50 and no longer going to buy it.

Might be enough to get me over the line....if Live (sorry Elite) has drastically improved their dynasty mode.
Tue Aug 03, 2010 7:36 pm
Ah, good point. Still precedes the official announcement, so far as I can see.

This might be the official announcement, since they send out a press release, these stories are written from it and set to post on the date. Then EA will just post the full press release on their site as the "announcement."

This is basically what's going to decide it for me.
NBA Jam coming with it is awesome, but if Dynasty Mode sees another year of just changing the background, I might have to go to 2k11.
Though if NBA Jam AND Dynasty Mode upgrades make the final version, I'll be incredibly happy.

They are cheating. Everyone who doesn't have a Wii, is now going to pick up Elite/Jam. Their whole "we're concentrating on getting a 3rd party sports game to sell on the Wii" doesn't make sense now.

Wow i do not like this announcement, I thought it was going to be something within the game a new mode or something. I'm never going to play a NBA arcade game, I'm not a big fan of them, I'm very dissapointed with this announcement.

Honestly, who the hell cares? NBA JAM it was great when you were 8 yrs old hell maybe even until your teens, but honestly when Live came out or other basketball sims, who still played NBA JAM?
That is great ploy to get the sales up and usher in a new younger generation of Elite Fans, but seriously is that what we've been waiting on? I know like every year, we will hear much more "in the coming weeks". We go through this every year. Live has made some great strides, no doubt and I can't wait until Oct. 5. But I must say 2k11 is seem to be leading in every front...thus far (yet to see gameplay).
Think about it.......
2k11 announces Micheal Jordan on the cover.........
Elite - Kevin Durant, no disrespect to Durant, but really?
2k11 release information about the Jordan challenge and classic teams like 97, 98 Bulls......
Elite - NBA JAM
The real-time physics engine sounds great...so the jury is still out
I've been playing Live since the 95 and even a Jordan vs Bird guy....But I must admit when 2k got Superstar Mode (or whatever it was called) I was about to switch. Now they have that plsu JORDAN and CLASSIC TEAMS!!
Anyway, This is show and prove year for Live/Elite......Last year made some great advances to keep some fans....But this is a do or die year for most I think. EA needs to WOW us

Those sum up my feelings. I was planning on getting the Wii version but but now, no chance.

This is GREAT NEWS!!!

That's great news, and a great move by ea.

Damn. Dissapointed. I thought it was something about the actual game. I really could careless about NBA Jam.
Wed Aug 04, 2010 2:24 am
EA has to somewhat compete with MJ on the cover of 2k!!! NBA Jam is not a garbage game
Wed Aug 04, 2010 4:15 am
it sounds cool but I'm still disappointed.

Now Im guranteed Im buying Elite!

Not to make a big deal about this/derail the thread, but if YOU really think about it, Kevin Durant makes a lot more sense as the cover than Micheal Jordan. Micheal Jordan was last relevant in the league in the late 90's.
These games are supposed to represent today, and last season the biggest breakout star was Kevin Durant.
Jordan on the cover in 2010 is pretty much solely a marketing ploy.
Now if this were 1998 and 2k had Jordan on the cover and Live had Kobe (who back then wasn't anything big yet), you'd have a point.
Wed Aug 04, 2010 5:27 am
Who the hell is this Micheal Jordan guy?
Wed Aug 04, 2010 7:40 am
Don't be such a jerk, I think he's only the G.O.A.T. Even better than Kobe!

Well, there's a nostalgia factor here and it would seem there's still a market for arcade sports games. NBA Street was pretty popular, I don't think Jam can really be dismissed as a kiddie game; it's just an alternative to the sim-oriented games. Granted it's not for everyone though and clearly it's not the announcement a lot of people were hoping for. I like the news but there are certainly other things that I'm hoping to see in NBA Elite 11, no question.

But that's assuming they can't make more big announcements and unveil things that we all want to see. This time around it's not something you're interested in and it appears you're not alone there, but there's still plenty of time for them to announce changes to the game modes and talk about the game itself.
Wed Aug 04, 2010 10:04 am
This bundle won't make me buy the game. I'll wait to know more about NBA Elite and hope that the game has improved.

I think you should take a look around the internet, far more, gobs of people, people into their late 20s/30s were excited for NBA Jam in a way they would never be for Elite or 2K. These people aren't hardcore NBA fans, casual at best who just like to dunk and be ON FIRE and want a fun multiplayer game.
These people are going to be buying Elite, using the code and trading it back in immediately or waiting for Elite to hit the bargin bins. (Or waiting to see if Jam releases on XBLA/PSN.) They're never going to be interested in Elite, and there's far far more of them than there are people who care at all about Elite or 2K. Once Jam becomes its own series instead of a pack-in they'll go back to not buying any of the "sims" like normal.
Wed Aug 04, 2010 10:32 am
I sure hope so. Once they realize how much NBA Jam sells, and that people choose that over the sims, they will make another Jam version which might just force them to rethink their product model of annual releases. Then we are talking sim releases every two years, with "upcoming season"-DLC instead of another shipped game.
