Wishlist Offshoot: NBA 2K12 Likes & Dislikes

Postby Andrew on Sat Oct 08, 2011 10:54 am

Similar to the previous thread discussing ideas from the NBA 2K series we'd like to see implemented in some way in EA's future games, we'll be sending in some feedback based on NBA 2K12. In a nutshell, post what you like and dislike in regards to NBA 2K12 here, including:

- Things from NBA 2K12 you think EA should do as well
- Things from NBA 2K12 you think EA shouldn't do
- Things from NBA 2K12 you'd like to see done in EA's game, but differently.

Likes:

Player lock - playing as one player in MyPlayer, Creating a Legend, and in all other modes if locked onto one player. Other players play their game, run plays, take shots, make moves. The locked player is part of a team effort.

Commentary - portions of commentary that focus on the game, and on events in an association or myplayer or whatever the universe in which the gamer is immersed.

Dislikes:

Player Lock - cannot call plays unless the locked player has the ball. Please allow a gamer to call plays whether or not the locked player has the ball.

Commentary - stories. Dislike the personal stories that dominate commentary. The same stories "So and so upped his scoring last season and worked hard to improve even more" repeat. It's nice the first time, but then is a minus rather than a plus.

Lack of stats. There is no record of past playoff brackets, no record of past leaders in various categories, no detailed record of previous seasons. Especially on PC, please include an ability to save stats, playoff trees, all the views and presentations of stats and records that exist in the current game and season. Please include the ability to save and store all past box scores, even if just in text format, along with all the season stats.

Dislike: Trade Logic. There are too many trades that include franchise/ star player.

I'll edit this post when I can think of more.

For Association mode:

Likes:

- Sheer depth of the mode
- Presentation of main news/results/milestones in league
- Covers all the measuring basis you can think of (awards, stats, metric stats, standings by league, conf, division, game splits, all-star voting, etc, etc)
- Hall of Fame
- Keeps track of history (winners, all-time stats etc)
- NBA Draft coverage
- Dynamic commentary
- You can't assign a retired player's number (from real life) to a player, therefore no #23 in Chicago, #33 in Boston or #34 in Houston etc.

Dislikes:

- Sim stats aren't very good
- Trade AI and free agent AI logic is flawed creating roster imbalance and trading for high 1st round draft picks is too easy
- You can't retire jersey numbers for any current and future players

Everything else:

Likes:

- Presentation (menus, in-game, everything)
- Gameplay
- Animations
- Customisation ability across the board (e.g. rosters, draft classes, custom teams etc)
- 3rd colour commentator
- Shot stick
- Option of having a My Player mode
- Create a Legend mode
- 2K Share (much better than EA Locker)
- Retro jerseys

Dislikes:

- Passing (can't do bounce pass, lob pass etc)
- No complete All-Star Weekend
- No importable draft classes from a college bball title

I may have to excuse myself for my bad English.
- Animations are too stiff and less-controllable. For example, when i try to get open, my player automatically falls in the animation where the opponent grabs me or something and it's very difficult to rip open, so it's sometimes really frustrating but still tolerable. So more sensitive controlling and dribbling.

- Too much flashes and show : maybe it's just me but the halftime reports are too intrusive and loud, so i tend to tap the skip button just to continue with the game and ignore all the "jibber-jabber". Maybe i'd like to view the halftime stats and look some highlights but that's it, no need for some realtime stats. I'd like to see simple and easy-to-use menu.
If i come up with something new i will definitely update this post, too. :)

I think the commentary in 2K12 is very strong, but sometimes it's to general. When they talk about a team or a player over the course of the game they say "he" or "they". It's hard to understand who they're talking about. There needs to be exact context so people can understand who is being discussed.

The AI in NBA 2K12 has glaring issues, in most possessions they take shots with close to no time left on the shot clock every time. When they do, they usually pump fake then go for a shot. I think 2K11 should be the foundation for the AI, but make it smarter. Team AI in single player modes should play as well as the player would expect them to play. I'm not a fan of playing in MyPlayer, end up on the Miami Heat, and have to carry in scoring because Lebron, Wade, and Bosh avg less then 20pts a game...

I feel the same way at times. I think they've done a great job with presentation having included all that stuff, but the ability to immediately skip or switch them off completely if you're short on time and just want to play would be handy. I'd like to see both games allow that in future releases.

Even though I haven't played 2K12 I can relate it with 2K11 which is the game I have. I wish the commentary team could talk about storylines of the season on Dynasty Mode. I'd like to hear while playing a game about trades and signings and how those could affect a team; how some player has stepped up his game during the season and other players who are underperforming; all star and MVP candidates, rumours, etc. Those things could have a huge impact if done correctly in Dynasty and Become Legendary modes.

Likes about 2k:
-The ability to tweak the AI to your liking
-Editing Players (the ability to edit jumpshots, sig moves, dunk packages, dribbling packages and all the above)
-Playbooks
-Presentation
-Ball Movement
-the dribbling (I only like this feature for Nba 2k. I would rather Nba Live keep it's dribbling controls from Nba Live 10 but add more to it.)
-Animations

Dislikes:
-Too many Dunks
-Passing (Can be frustrating at times especially since it doesn't always go in the direction you want the ball to go. Passing is definitely better in Nba live 10)
-Defense (Nba Live 10 is clearly better in this area).
-Cheap moves (Mainly teams with superstars)
-The game stats are ridiculous at times.
-The rosters update frequently the but the edits 2k make are questionable at times. It seems they boost certain ratings just to bump a player up to an Ovrl rating everybody would be satisfied with.
-The running looks as if the players are ice skating at times

That is all I have for now.

2k11 was the best in the area of defense, live 10 was horribly scripted

THIS. A MILLION TIMES THIS.

This is the thing lacking from NBA 2K's commentary. If this goes in, we're golden as far as presentation goes.

And I'm baffled by 2K's choice not to offer MLB's Play Flow option also in NBA. Play Flow is the option in MLB 2K that adjusts the presentation's bells and whistles. You can either have the full presentation with pause for overlays, commentary and presentation animations, or get no presentation to get a quick game if you're short on time or playing with a friend.

I hate in 2K12 that CPU AI logic is terrible at times. Not double teaming the post when there is an obvious mismatch. Too easy to score in post too.

I really wish they have a dynamic zooming camera like the 2K12 Beluba cam. I'm having difficulties playing other games with different cameras now. That cam, if you havent tried it, keeps the action zoomed out while in the back/mid court, but when things get 1v1 it zooms in close so you have a better, almost cinematic, view of the players.
Opinions are my own.
