Help a PC gaming newbie out please

Postby DTX3 on Wed Oct 14, 2009 4:01 am

Hey guys, I'm not big on PC gaming so I'm not sure what's going on. Installed 2k from Steam, installed it and it works. But when it comes to playing a game it runs horribly. Did the benchmarking and it was giving me 3 FPS, what the hell? I'm also getting half empty arenas. Here are my specs. I'm running it on my MacBook Pro booting Windows XP.

Got this from the mac website.

Up to 3.06GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
High-performance graphics
2.53GHz, 2.66GHz, 2.8GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor
4GB memory
250GB, 320GB, or 500GB 5400-rpm hard drive
NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT graphics processor with 256MB or 512MB GDDR3 memory (select models)
NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics processor

Help please?

Im not sure about the actual performance of those graphics cards but that could be the problem..
Many laptops aren't built for any kind of gaming.
And did you install the drivers from the NVIDIA site..

Nope, my laptop came with it already installed. I'm able to run Sims 2 and a few other games on it with no problems.

Yeah, they're both enabled. I had to install XP, it didn't come with it. Everything is up to date on XP it seems. I guess I'm stuck with a game that doesn't work. (N)

Well the game works but the mac is falling short..You could have gotten a better laptop for whatever money you paid because macs charge a lot for styling or whatever..
I have 2 laptops and dont even know what graphics card they have as I use a much more powerful desktop that could be cheaper than laptop..

Check this site out http://cyri.systemrequirementslab.com/srtest/

Edit: NBA 2K10 isn't on the drop down list but try FIFA 10 since it's a new release game, it'll give you an idea of where you're at specs-wise.

Your integrated graphic chipset will always be the bottleneck in this case.
Also, most HDD are 7200 RPM or more these days, 5400 RPM is really not a good fit for 3D intensive games.

The Apple has the option of switching video cards. Follow this tutorial to change your video card to the 9600GT card. http://rantsandstuff.com/2008/10/15/how ... cbook-pro/

Also, make sure to update all your video card drivers. I'm not really sure about this part cuz i dont know if you needa get them from Apple, or jus get it off Nvidia like all us Windows guys.

I don't kno specifics but I can say pretty confidently that you should be able to get 30-40 FPS on medium settings.

Hope this helps bro.

I'm not sure how fast the 9400M/9600M is, but it should run better than 3 fps. It should be going a bit faster than that. Especially if the 256mb of ddr3 memory is dedicated to the graphics chip and not shared from the system memory. Seriously, DDR3 ram for system memory? You should be running the game fine. Try looking for a guide on optimizing your laptop for gaming before spending money on a videocard.
