Why the massive holes on the benches?

Can anyone explain why there are massive gaps at the end of most benches??? It looks so stupid, compared to the "cramped" look they have in the real NBA..

P.S- I just played against the Suns, and one thing i wouldnt mind next year would be to see steve nash laying on the floor at end of the bench (little things like this can add up to make a game so much better).
