bctrackboi11's Gear Locker: 1962-63 Cleveland Pipers
The Cleveland Pipers spent a year in the American Basketball League and were owned by George Steinbrenner, years before he even thought of the Yankees. In 1962, he signed superstar Jerry Lucas and applied for entry into the NBA and was approved by the owners. Somewhere between the ABL suing the team and forcing them to stay, and Steinbrenner losing money, the Pipers languished and eventually folded. Shortly after, the ABL folded as well. The Pipers and the ABL left behind a legacy that lasts to this day, however: they were the first league to introduce the three point line.
They were Cleveland's last professional basketball team to win a championship, winning the ABL trophy in 1963.
